Former Eastern Umpire Appointments Secretary for 20 years from 1963 and Cornwall Cricket League vice-president Sam Goodwin from the St Blazey area has passed away at the age of 86.

OVER SIXTIES Final arrangements are being made for the new Over Sixties Championship next season. Four teams from the south west will take part namely Cornwall, Devon, Somerset and Wiltshire. Matches will be played on a home and away basis, making six games in all. They will be played over 45 overs in May, June and July. The winners of this group may be matched against the winners of the London area but this has yet to be decided upon. It is hoped the competition will become a national one within a year or two. The organiser of the Over Fifties, Geoff Husband, will be looking after this new venture, at least for the first year or two

Perranporths AGM is Thursday November the 20th at 7.30 at the Ponsmere Hotel Perranporth, If you are interested in joining us please come along, The club are currently looking for players of all standards for weekend and midweek matches, if you don't wish to play but would like to be involved we are also looking for scorers, umpires, The junior section is now up and running with teams of all ages there is still room for new players and coaching sessions is currently being held by a qualified ECB coach at the memorial hall in perranporth every Monday night 6pm till 7.30pm please ring G Gayton on 07970968134 for further details.

Coaches Needed! The Cornwall Cricket Board's Area and County cricket programme is due to start this weekend coming, 2nd November and age groups are still short of qualified coaches to run these sessions. Area cricket is the bridge between club and county representative cricket and is therefore a very important part of the player pathway for all the children who have aspirations of getting into the county youth coaching structure.

The Cornwall Cricket Board are asking qualified coaches to help coach between November and December of this year for the age groups that still are yet to appoint coaches. There are two Areas where coaches are still needed, the Penwtih (Penzance, St Just, Paul, Hayle) and the Tamar (Liskeard, Callington, Bude, Looe) Area. However if there are any coaches from any part of the county will to help we will be happy to hear from you. If the Cornwall Cricket Board can not identify coaches by the 31st October then the sessions will have to be cancelled.

Currently there are over 300 children awaiting trial and coaching and if coaches can't be found then some of these children will not get the opportunity to be coached or play cricket over the summer for their respective Area. This is a worrying state of affairs and one that needs to be rectified. The only way this can be achieved is if coaches offer their time to coach children who are enthusiastic and willing to develop their skills. All coaches will need to have a minimum of the UKCC2, ECB Level 1 or above qualification, an up to date First Aid certificate and Safeguarding and Child Protection Certificate. If you would like to help this situation please contact Joe Skinner, Cricket Development Manager on 07785 722251 or email joe.skinner@ecb.co.uk. It will be very sad if the development team have to cancel development sessions because there are no coaches to deliver and help develop their clubs talented young cricketers.

Gorran Cricket Club is holding the Club's Annual General Meeting in the Pavilion, on Friday, 7th November, starting at 7.30pm. Gorran's 1st XI finished in 5th place in County Division One in 2008 whilst their 2nd XI, with many very young players in their ranks, had an equally enjoyable season, finishing in mid-table in Division 4 (East). The 2009 season promises to be an exciting one for the Club with a building programme to extend their premises, well underway. The meeting is open to members and prospective members. Charlie Lovell (Secretary)

This year’s Women’s Cricket AGM will be taking place on Wednesday 22nd October 2008 at Truro Cricket Club, 7.45pm. Everyone is welcome to attend.

League Press Release Grampound Road /Newquay September 2008

Grampound Road C C face relegation from the Jolly's Drinks ECB Cornwall Premier League after a points claim was dismissed by the League's Disciplinary Committee. The club made an official complaint regarding the cancellation of their game at St Austell on August Bank Holiday Monday. They claimed that the St Austell club failed to make adequate preparation of a pitch to the standard required for a 110 over Premier game. In accordance with League Rules Grampound Road CC has the right to appeal to the Cornwall Cricket Board.

In a separate matter the League also investigated why Newquay C C's home Premier League match against St Just CC, also on August Bank Holiday Monday, was cancelled. After a lengthy investigation the Disciplinary Committee accepted Newquay CC's reasons but have recommended a number of actions to resolve the ongoing problems the Club faces in staging Premier League matches. In April of 2009 the League Grounds Committee will undertake a full inspection of the ground and the ground equipment to determine whether the ground and associated ground staff fulfil the requirements of a Premier League Club. Failure will result in the Newquay ground being removed from the Premier League approved list until such time as appropriate renovations have been completed.

League Update - Press Release. The Launceston v Callington game, postponed from last Saturday, is to be played on Saturday 13th September, the League’s Disciplinary Committee have determined. Due to player unavailability Launceston had requested that the game be played on Sunday instead. Camborne’s remaining game with Luckett has also been rearranged for Saturday. The Hayle v Grampound Road seconds game has not been rearranged and will therefore be regarded as null and void.

The League Disciplinary Committee held a hearing on Tuesday evening regarding the two Jolly’s Drinks ECB Cornwall Premier League August Bank Holiday Monday games that were cancelled – Newquay v St Just and St Austell v Grampound Road. The League are yet to finalise their decision and the outcome will not be made public until the clubs have been officially informed in writing later this week

Camborne School of Mines 68-9 (M Charlesworth 25; P Treloar 4-13, A Morris 2-13).

Helston beat Camborne School of Mines by 37 runs.

The weather caused further disarray in Cornish Cricket with all ten scheduled games postponed. The six East v West County Finals were all called off and have all been rearranged for next Saturday 13th (1pm). The division three final at St Blazey and division five final at Tideford were provisionally rescheduled for Sun 7th , pending pitch inspections but a failure in the weather to improve saw them both further postponed on Saturday evening..

A week after the season should have been completed no fewer than ten games remain to be played. All four games yesterday were called off for a second occasion. Luckett are due to play Grampound Road on Sunday but should it not take place Luckett are prepared to travel to Camborne again. Penzance's home game with Perranarworthal has been further rescheduled for next Sunday. To allow the division six final to take place next Saturday Redruth have agreed to reverse the venue of their rearranged County Division One game with Troon.

The Cornwall Youth Cricket Festival, which takes place in Penryn for the 22nd season from 10th August, is on the lookout for new members for its Organising Committee, which accepts that age is catching up on the present dozen or so hard-working enthusiasts. CYCF has always been run efficiently and been supported by many groups, such as umpires, sponsors and members of the host club, St Gluvias. What they’re looking for in particular is a few more, preferably young adult, helpers to be available to support the week’s cricket, which is played on four or five grounds. Preparing, maintaining and clearing the various pitches, including Flicx, provides plenty of manual work prior to and during the event. In addition, administrative help and new ideas for the Committee can be put to good use throughout the year. If you could offer either or both, Chairman Mark Mitchell (mgm@dcpslondon.org) or Secretary Richard Mitchell (bond.fal@tiscali.co.uk) would be delighted to hear from you.

Red letter day - All 75 Cornwall Cricket League clubs have activated their play-cricket websites.

The latest release of play-cricket, put into live this afternoon, addressed some of the main issues reported over the weekend just gone, namely: The limitation on the bowlers' overs field to three characters; this has now been increased to four, allowing instances like 10.2 or 17.5 to be entered again

The problem that occurred when adding match officials to a fixture, which resulted in the name not being added, and a pop-up showing some code being displayed. This should no longer happen

Not being able to enter the fielder's name for run-outs; it should now be possible to do this These should no longer be an issue.

Any other reported issues from the first week have been logged and are being looked at. Please report any new issues or problems to the help-desk at playcricket@ecb.co.uk Many thanks for your help and patience with this - we do appreciate it and will continue to improve play-cricket for you 09/05/2008

From Lewis Bond - Callington CC Vice Chairman

Richard Norris died of acute liver failure on FridayApril 4th. He was 46. Richard was a former captain of Callington Cricket Club and captained the side to it's best ever finish - 2nd in the old County One in 1991. He was a majestic left handed bat with excellent timing. I recall that one of our ex batsmen, Mick Evely used to say that Norry hit the ball harder than anyone he knew. Norry was very popular throughout the cricketing community and whilst most of us felt that he gave up the game far too early, people were always asking after him. He never married. The service will take place at Callington Parish Church on Friday April 18th 2008 at 10.15am
