Under 21's ECB Competition axed

The aftermath of the England v Zimbabwe affair, in last year's ICC World Cup, will have an effect on Cornish Cricket this year. The ECB have been faced with a shortfall of over £2 million following England's refusal to play in Harware, which meant the ICC withheld their share of World Cup profits. As a result reductions have been made across the ECB including the recreational game. As a result the ECB Under 21 competition has been abandoned for 2004. Cornwall did well in the ECB 38 Counties one-day games last year, which had replaced Under 19 two-day cricket. There were wins away to Somerset and Dorset and a dramatic last ball defeat at Truro against Devon, who went on to win through to the national final, where they played Lancashire at the County Ground, Derby. Cornwall's final group game, which proved to be academic, saw a revenge win for Somerset at St Austell. With the prospect in 2004 of no representative cricket between Under 17 and full County level the County Club will be looking to, possibly, provide some Under 21 matches if fixtures can be arranged . Under 21 Manager Mr Dick Collins is "most disappointed" that the National structure has been abolished following on from last year's decisions to end the 38 County competition for the Senior County XI and Under 19 two-day games. It now means there is no County Board adult recreational competitve cricket available across the country.

2003 / Results / Match Reports       play-cricket ECB Under 21 Official Website

Cornwall County Cricket Club have announced fixture details for the ECB 38 County Under 21 competition for 2003. The one-day 50 over per side tournament was previously competed for by the full County XI but re-organisation will now see the competition being played by Under 21 teams with two over-aged players allowed. This replaces the ECB Under 19 County Championship. Cornwall face a tough prospect having to play Somerset home and away plus have other group games against Dorset and Devon.

The Cornwall team will be managed by Dick Collins who has previously assisted Tim Hyslop at Under 19 and Under 17 levels. The Under 19's last year narrowly failed to win their group when they drew a high scoring decider against Devon at Seaton in the ECB Under 19 two-day County Championship

Dorset Under 21's v Cornwall Under 21's at Dorchester on Tuesday 8th July   Card

Cornwall made it two wins out of two in the ECB Under 21 Championship with a 4 wicket win at Dorchester against Dorset. Victory came with 22 overs to spare and was more comfortable than the score suggest as Cornwall, chasing 133 to win were 101-3 at one stage. A heavy drizzle greeted the team's arrival but play got underway on time at 11am with Cornwall winning an important toss and electing to field. Rob Harrison (2-16) and Chris Hunkin (1-20) used the seaming conditions well. They bowled their full quota of 10 overs each to reduce the home team to 39-3 off 20 overs. The home team recovered somewhat to reach 101-4 but fell away as the overs ran out with Ben Smeeth taking 5-24, aided by some good catching.

All the Cornish batsmen contributed with skipper Martin Pearce making 30, Hunkin 26 and Alex Tunnadine top scoring with 20. Michael Bone, on his debut, struck a glorious straight six. Pearce and Hunkin were particularly severe on Dorset's permitted over aged Minor County player Sean Walbridge, who has over 200 Minor County wickets. He went for 23 off just 3 overs. With a strong Devon team thrashing Dorset in their opening game all is set for a showdown at Truro on Tuesday 22nd July when Cornwall meet Devon in the third of four group games.

Somerset v Cornwall at Clevedon on Thursday 3rd July Card                Photos

Cornwall Under 21's pulled off a magnificent win in their opening ECB Under 21's competition group game against Somerset at Clevedon. They won by 8 wickets with almost 11 overs to spare thanks to a marvellous unbroken stand of 201 between Danny Lee and Chris Hunkin. The pair came together after Cornwall had made an inauspicious start in their search of 212 in the 50 over game. Andy Shorten was snapped up in the gully off the third ball of the innings. Quickie Mike Parsons took the wicket, one of four players (Neil Edwards, Gareth Andrew and skipper Tom Webley the others) who have played 1st XI cricket. When Alex Tunnadine was yorked in the sixth over it became 13-2. Hunkin played in a typically positive manner and reached 50 at a run a ball as the hundred came up in the 20th over. Lee played the anchor role but still put the bad ball away. On reaching his fifty off 73 balls he opened his shoulders hitting a couple of legside sixes in addition to 12 fours. He ended on 81 off 107 balls. Hunkin was superb and was only denied his century when former St Just player Jason Hall, who has recently returned following a back injury, conceded 11 wides in just 13 balls. Hunkin's 98 not out included 12 fours off 112 balls.

The Somerset innings got off to an poor start, after being asked to bat by Martin Pearce in warm, overcast conditions. Steve Jacques struggled in his second over bowling 5 illegitimate balls and conceding 17 runs but his last was a beauty to get rid of Andrew, who shouldered arms, for 11. Next over Rob Harrison got Edwards to drag one on off his thigh pad. The dismissal of the England Under 19 and Paul player for 2 a real boost to the Cornish cause. James Hildreth drove Harrison to Chris Hunkin at cover point next over to make it 30-3. Skipper Tom Webley, who made a century and a fifty in Cambridge UCCE's win over Northamptonshire in May, made 28 but was spectacularly caught by a diving Tunnadine at gully to reduce to home team to 75-5 which became 111-6 in the 33rd over when Davis was caught by Robert Jose off Pearce. The 17 year old St Just keeper had a very tidy game and didn't concede a single bye. It was former St Just player Jason Hall that rallied the home team playing well for his 50. Nat Price made 36 not out and Rowe 29 not out in an unbroken 7th wicket stand of 56 over the closing 8 overs as the home teamrecovered well to total 211-7. Rob Harrison took 2-27 off 10 overs and Hunkin 2-14.

Devon 290-5 (117 overs) : N Bettis 71, R Foan 64, T Beer 63, M Bettis 29, S Edmonds 29no; M Pearce 3-64, B Smeeth 2-66.

Devon (8pts) drew with Cornwall (9pts).

Cornwall were denied a quarter-final place for the first time in the ECB Under 19 County Championship when they could only draw their Group decider against Devon played at Seaton near the Devon / Dorset border. On the opening day, after being put in, Cornwall had early setbacks. On a helpful pitch in the first hour they lost Peter Edwards, Ben Smeeth and Andrew Shorten with only 31 on the board. Martin Pearce (58), who played a number of excellent cover drives and Alex Tunnandine (41) got the total up to 165 but it was a great 121 stand for the 6th wicket that got Cornwall to maximum batting points. Adam Barber was unlucky to miss his century making 92 and he got excellent support from Daniel Pollard who was unbeaten on 53 when the declaration came in the 98th over on reaching 301-7. Devon survived 5 overs on the first evening.

On the second morning a damp outfield did Cornwall little favours as did a pitch , prepared by Seaton Club President and Somerset CCC Chief Executive Peter Anderson, that just got better and better. Cornwall needed wickets early on but they didn't come as the home team reached 80 without loss at lunch. Richard Foan was out soon after for 64 having dominated a stand of 91. Devon , aware that a draw would be just enough to see them top the group, took no chances. Opener Tom Beer batted over 5 hours until being dismissed at the start of the final hour for 63. Pearce picked up 3-64 off 30 overs and Smeeth 2-66, also off 30 overs but with Neil Bettis making 71 the home team never looked like collapsing and were happy to draw the game with 5 wickets down ending 12 runs short of a win on first innings.

Cornwall though with 2 wins and a draw in their 4 games can be proud of their efforts which saw them in with a chance of progress in the competition right up to the final session. It was Devon though who won the group by just a couple of points with the win at Camborne, when Pearce and Smeeth were on Minor County duty, being crucial at the end.

ECB Under 19 County Championship Tue 7th August (at Truro C C )

Cornwall 122: A Shorten 43, R Harrison 22 ; R Foan 5-30, D Field 4-42

Devon 143 B Smeeth 4-29 from 26.4 overs, A Shorten 2-24

Cornwall (2nd inns) 102-6: A Shorten 28, R Harrison 25 , A Barber 20no

Cornwall (5 pts) lost on first innings to Devon (16 pts)

Despite an excellent fightback on the second day Cornwall were defeated by Devon on first innings who passed their target with only two wickets remaining.

When Cornwall batted again they soon lost Michael Bone,Craig Richards (both St Austell) and Alex Tunnadine (Menheniot) for ducks as they slumped to 7-3 and the possibility of an outright victory for Devon seemed much more realistic.Sensible batting , though, by Andrew Shorten (28),Rob Harrison(25) and Adam Barber (20no) saw Cornwall to 102-6.

Therefore Devon qualify for the quarter-finals as group winners but this was Cornwall's first loss in a season which saw them defeat Berkshire on first innings at Werrington and gain two creditable draws against Dorset and Wiltshire respectively on their travels. Both of the Duchy's away matches were disrupted by rain and had good prospects for victories on first innings in both encounters before the elements changed matters.
