However, following a marvellous effort by the Werrington grounds staff, we started on time at 1pm. Dorset won the toss and asked Cornwall to bat. Robins and Williams put on 66 for the first wicket before the introduction of Stickland, a leg spinner, caused two wickets to fall quite quickly. Both wickets falling to catches by the keeper, Ridley. Partnerships of 38, between Rowe and Davis, and 41, between Rowe and Smeeth, steadied things but nobody went on from good starts to compile a big score. Losing two wickets at 152 Snell and Roberts then compiled a stand of 59. Roberts and Crane then completing the Cornish innings with a stand of 24 bringing the total to 235-7. Stickland finishing with 3-55 from 10 overs. Dorset started their innings with a stand of 41 between Esson and Atkins but Chris Roberts broke this with a wicket in his first over. New Cornwall Under 21 Coach Sean Hooper looks forward to the 2008 season. This is an incredibly important age group to work with as players step out of the excellent Cornwall Schools set up and often have little or no coaching or progression into adult cricket. I have taken over the Under 21s this year after 8 years of hard work from Dick Collins and will work with Jeremy Martin to help manage the team with Steve Raven Sr scoring and hope to provide a close link to the full Cornwall set up. My aim is to help produce players to represent Cornwall at Minor Counties level and to also support players that might want to progress to First Class cricket. In the meantime we will also be trying to win the South West Counties Under 21 competition! There are 8 competition fixtures home and away against Devon, Dorset, Wiltshire and the Isle of Wight and we start with warm up games against Cornwall and Somerset 2nd XI. The competition is a 50 overs per side win/lose situation as per the World Cup. There is a fantastic amount of talent to pick from and players will need to be on top of their games to be selected. Monthly training sessions will take place, hopefully on the first Thursday of the month, at St Austell CC with the emphasis being on preparation and team building. I hope to include all players that are strong enough to play and understandably the nucleus will come from Premier and Division One clubs though no one will be excluded on that basis alone. Having been Head Coach of the Under 16/17 Winter programmes for the past 4 seasons I have a good knowledge of most of the players and also benefited from seeing players in Division One last year that I might not normally have seen on Premier duty. I am keen to develop my scouting network and anyone that wants to let me know about players can contact me by email coaching@sharesports.net or by phone 07782187463. We have been fortunate to receive some kit sponsorship from North Gear but would still like to promote a more professional image and sponsorship or other support would be greatly appreciated - please contact me as above if you or your company are interested. Let's hope for some good weather and please come and support the fantastic young talent we have here in Cornwall, Sean Hooper Head Coach Cornwall Under 21s

Cornwall’s only partnership of note was 46 between Kelvin Snell (11) and Dan Davis (46) as Cornwall made 157. Cornwall came out in a very determined mood but despite some good bowling the first wicket did not fall until the 21st over. The bowlers never gave up but Devon just had to pace their innings. Following the demise in 2003 of the ECB funded national tournament a programme of Development XI friendlies were played in 2004. In 2005 Cornwall got together with Devon, Dorset and the Isle of Wight to form a 'Southern Counties Under 21 competition'. Six one-day fifty over matches were played home and away with Dorset winning the title. Changes for 2006 will see no overaged players allowed. Previously 2 per team were allowed. All matches will start at 1pm unless mutually agreed. After discussion it has been agreed due to financial constraints to remain with a 50 over format rather than two-day games.
