In Round 3 of the Jolly's Drinks ECB Cornwall Premier League match of the day could well be at St Just where Callington visit, both teams having gained winning draws last week. Elsewhere Troon play Grampound Road, Werrington, boosted by an encouraging display at Truro last week make the trip to Falmouth and in the east Menheniot take on Truro. The season commences in County Division 1. Helston have made some close season signings in a bid to get back to premier league status. Wayne Vincent, who has enjoyed success at Mullion and St Buryan, and was the top batsman in the Premier league last year, returns to Beacon Parc along with another former player left arm spinner Matthew Crapp. A third member of the St Buryan team last year, Damien Ward (formerly St Ives) has also made the move. Juan Le Maitre, a South African batsman has also been registered and is available for the first month. With Steve Pollard as skipper, Dave Legge his deputy and the experience of Dave Pascoe, Dominic Bostock and Dave Clift plus talented youngsters in the form of Chris Martin , Nigel Dunstan and Johnny Ludlam the prospects are looking good. Two players have left however with opening bowler Lee Caddy moving to Truro and Mark Thomas to Praze. Elsewhere in County 1 there are a number of significant changes of personnel. Simon Wherry has joined Rosudgeon from Mullion. Hayle have signed Troon's Martin Jenkin and Glen McCallum from Perth, Australia, who is reported as being of express pace. Beacon welcome former player Damien Trease and Tim Kitchen , who have both moved from neighbouring Troon. Camborne have been particularly active and have 8 new faces in the team to play Penzance. They are Malcolm Pooley who will captain the side plus Kevin Roberts, Darren Shorland, Scott Curnow (all Troon), Ian Goldsworthy (Praze), Nick Carter (Grampound Road), Phil Bostock (Perranarworthal) and Australians Alistair Lee and Brett Sawyer. Neil Stoddard has returned to Truro. Penzance, skippered by Tim Lord have gained Gavin Edwards from St Buryan and Peter Edwards from St Just. St Austell have the same line up under Matt Ellison with players committed to returning from university during the season to ensure continuity. Paul under Andrew Snell have signed a New Zealander Scott Bonner and will again look to Neil Pengelly for a hatful of runs. Goldsithney have suffered a late blow with Simon Keast moving back to Troon. Opening Fixtures Camborne v Penzance, Gorran v Helston, Rosudgeon v St Austell, Paul v Hayle, St Minver v Goldsithney, Launceston v Beacon.
With fine weather forecast the Jolly's Drinks ECB Cornwall Premier League season is set to get fully underway on Saturday. Last Sunday's opening day, was a damp squib as saturated grounds saw cancellations everywhere before noon. With teams taking six points each the real winners were probably Truro, who had a bye and find themselves in the unusual, and doubtless temporary, position of propping up the table. Their visitors to Boscawen Park today are new boys Werrington, making a return to the top division after six years. Truro have had a couple of useful warm up games against Camborne and Helston last Saturday, where Neil Stoddard (83) , Julian Bose (58 no) and Ryan Driver 42 got into the groove. Driver captains the team today in the absence of Tom Sharp. Tim Marrion, Andrew Libby and Lee Caddy make their league debuts for the club in a side which includes County men Ben Price and Jon Kent, in addition to the returning Stoddard and Carl Murphy. Werrington face a stiff examination, not helped with father and son bowlers Andrew and Alex Smeeth missing. They are due to embark for home today , following the West of England Under 15's West Indies Easter tour. Champions Newquay have switched the venue for today's game with Menheniot, which will now be played at Fourgates. The construction of the new multi-million Sports Complex, due to be opened during the season, has caused some early season outfield problems at the resort club. Tim Walton will lead the side in the absence of West of England Under 15 coach Peter Bolland. With Driver and Marrion's moves to Truro and Ollie Turbull to Perranarworthal, there will be a new look to Newquay's batting. Returning Australian Jim Boyland and new recruit, 23 year old kiwi all rounder Ben Rapson, are expected to feature strongly. Menheniot under new skipper Alex Tunnadine will miss opener Danny Lee, whose appearances will be limited following a move to London. On the plus side they welcome two overseas, 19 year old, all-rounders, David Irwin from Zimbabwe and South African Richard Ashworth. In the west all roads lead to Troon, with St Just providing the opposition. St Just's pre season has been dogged with doubts about professional Justin Stephens, who has been reported as requesting a move to Penzance. On the plus side however Gareth May's side have benefited from the demise of St Buryan with the acquisition of the George brothers, Nick and Mark and, subject to League clearance, could play young Australian paceman Steve Browne, who was due to arrive in the county yesterday. Troon have had a rough winter losing players and further pre-season blows have been the loss of opener Alan Shears who has emigrated to France, Martin Strick who has announced he will be playing for Constantine in Division 2 and doubts over the arrival of an overseas signing. However Jason Weeks will have the former Falmouth duo David Roberts and Tony Matthews at his disposal with seamer Malcolm Bell making a comeback. Promising youngsters Matthew Rowe and Cornwall Under 15 team-mate Daniel Davis, who has moved from Tideford, will give a new look to the village club's line up. Callington meet Grampound Road at New Road. Both teams have had quiet player movement close season. The home team's batting again centres around Andy Snowdon, Andy Hocking and Marcus Gilbert while the attack led by Ian Bishop, Jim Shorten and Godfrey Furse should give new 'Road' skipper Chris Hunkin and fellow County colleague Martin Pearce plenty to think about. Grampound Road do have a new face in 21 year old Australian Josh Platt but they don't have the services of Nick Carter following his move to Camborne. On Sunday in the National Club Competition - The Cockspur Cup, Falmouth host Truro, Callington meet Exeter and Grampound Road travel to Plympton. Newquay switch venue with Menheniot The Jolly's Drinks ECB Premier League game on Sat 24th April between Newquay and Menheniot has been switched to Menheniot as the Sports Centre ground is not ready. The £2.5 million new Sports Complex is due to be ready during the season.
Wet Start to the Premier League Season Rain has severely affected the start of the ECB Cornwall Premier League Season Overnight rain followed by heavy showers has caused champions Newquay's opening game at Troon in the ECB Cornwall Premier League to be cancelled. The other three games, Menheniot v Falmouth, Grampound Road v St Just, and Callington v Werrington.was also all called off around 11am All teams take 6 points each.
Premier League officially accredited The Jolly's Drinks ECB Cornwall Premier League has received official accreditation from the ECB for the fourth year. There are only 23 accredited leagues this year. The South Wales and Leicestershire Leagues have decided to play matches of only 100 overs and therefore do not meet the requirements for accreditation and funding.
