07/04 Somerset v Cornwall 13th April - Match preview

MCCA Trophy at Falmouth Cornwall 218-8, Devon 222-9 with 2 balls to spare.

Cornwall dramatically lost their one-day MCCA Trophy game against Devon at Falmouth yesterday by just one wicket with only 2 balls to spare. With 8 needed off the last over the first ball was hit for six. Then, in a tense finish, Cornwall would had won if a catch had been held - but it was not to be. Cornwall had earlier made 218-8 in their 50 overs with Neil Curnow top scoring with 67. Devon ended on 222-9.

Cornwall's next game is against Wales at Abergavenny next Sunday.

Devon's last pair needed eight off the last over: Bishop hits a six over cover point, dropped catch at mid off and the single ties the scores, play and miss, four to third man to win the game scorecard

Gary Thomas found some early season form for Cornwall in their warm-up game with the County Under 21's at Truro on Sunday. Thomas hit a century ahead of Cornwall's opening MCCA Trophy game with Devon at Falmouth on Sunday (11am). His 126 included 7 sixes and 10 fours off 117 balls and he shared an opening stand of 160 with Jonathan Kent, who hit six boundaries in his 54. Gavin Edwards, who was drafted into the side as a late replacement to keep wicket in place of injured Karl Turner made 19 batting at number 3. Rob Harrison was undefeated on 32 as the innings closed on 291-5 off 50 overs. Andrew Libby and Stefan Churcher took two wickets apiece. Daniel Stephens (Camborne) only conceded 26 runs from his 10 overs.

In reply the Under 21's lost the early wicket of Ryan Edwards but Matt Robins (Werrington) impressed making 50 off 81 balls including 2 sixes and 6 fours. Opener Ashley Hocking (Bude) also made 50 before retiring as the total reached 160 for 4.

Cornwall 291-5 (G Thomas 126, J Kent 54, R Harrison 32no, G Edwards 19, T Sharp 16; A Libby 2-46, S Churcher 2-46, D Stephens 1-26), Cornwall Under 21's 160-4 (M Robins 50, A Hocking 50 ret, D Davis 14, G Bone 13; T Sharp 2-38, N George 1-8, N Ivamy 1-37). Cornwall beat Cornwall Under 21's by 131 runs.

Camborne CC have acquired the services of South African Bronwell Williams for the coming season. Bronwell is in this Country to work as a Cricket Development Officer in the Camborne area under the direction of Tim Marrion (County Development Manager) and has been approved to play league cricket by the League Management Committee.

Camborne Club Chairman Mark Richards says "26 year old Williams is a level three coach. He will provide that important link between our Club and local schools. He will be working to establish cricket amongst women & girls in the area, as well as overseeing coaching and player development at our Club". Camborne CC wish to thank the ECB, the County CDM & the League Management Committee for all their support and encouragement for this exciting project. The appointment is funded by Sportsmatch, local businesses and Awards for All.

Two teams have withdrawn from the Western Section of the Jolly's Drinks Cornwall Cricket League on the eve of the season. Constantine and Praze Cricket Clubs, who are both long standing members of the League, have both decided to run one team only due to a player shortage. In the interest of helping both clubs to continue, and hopefully re-build, the League have, reluctantly, agreed to their similar requests to withdraw their first XI's from Divisions Two and Three respectively. Both Clubs will run one team only, playing in Division Six West this season.

The Cornwall Youth Cricket Festival would like potential UMPIRES for the Festival to contact us (either Conway Polkinghorne - 01209 213147 or 07733 205602, or our Secretary, Richard Mitchell - 01326 212788). We have a good number of local volunteers for the week (this year 6th - 11th August), but we would like to have more qualified, or at least regular, umpires available. They're guaranteed an friendly welcome and first-class hospitality!
