Latest - Finals Report Sunday 10 April 2011

Falmouth Cricket Club, past winners of the six-a-sides when it was held at the Carn Brea Leisure Centre, won the inaugural Cornwall Cricket Board Six-a-Side Competition at the Cornwall Cricket Centre, on Sunday. Their opponents in the final were the Cornwall Sports Partnership team, who had seen off the strong St Austell outfit in an exciting semi-final. However, the final itself was a rather tame affair, as Falmouth rattled up a score of 129 without losing a wicket. Captain Adrian Noott led the way from the front, ably supported by Richard Kellow, Antony Angove, Jon Udy, Liam Hoban and, though he didn't bat on this occasion, Harry Roberts. CSP struggled to 82 all out, in a bit of an "after the Lord Mayor's Show" performance, but could be pleased with having taken second place in a well-contested tournament, which will begin earlier next winter, getting underway in late October 2011.

The first two elimination matches on Sunday went to form, with CSP and Truro easily overcoming Falmouth II and Wadebridge respectively. In the first semi-final, a terrific match-winning knock by Lewis Sanders took the Sports Partnership team to a last ball, one-wicket win over previously unbeaten St Austell. Behind the run rate and with 4 wickets down at the halfway stage, things looked stacked against the batting team, but Community Coach Sanders kept his head and took the game to the final ball, needing just one run to tie and two to win. A missed run out opportunity saw even a tie disappear from St Austell's grasp as a three was completed and CSP were in the final. Premier League rivals Truro and Falmouth then took to the court and Tim Marrion looked to continue where he had left off in the previous round, but was eventually out for 38 as Truro slumped to 79 all out. Falmouth cruised into the final with 5 wickets to spare, with Antony Angove and Jon Udy the main run-getters.

The Plate competition, for the six lowest-placed teams, was won by Beacon, who had, until then, had a fairly poor tournament by their standards. They won all three games on Finals Day, performing better with each match and putting a fine bowling and fielding display to surprise Newquay in the Plate Final. Earlier, Beacon had comfortably accounted for both Wendron and Chacewater, but the other semi-final was an exciting battle of two north coast teams, as Newquay saw off the spirited challenge of Mount Hawke & Porthtowan with just three balls to spare. Their rivals reached 124-4 in their 12 overs, which just wasn't quite enough. In the final, Matt Floyd's 33 helped Beacon to set Newquay a fair, but nowhere near imposing, 112 to win. The surfing capital boys never really got going, though, as four run outs from the sharp and very wound-up Beacon six saw them lose wickets rapidly. Only Joe Crane stood up to be counted with the bat, but his heroic 49 couldn't get his team within range, as they fell to a disappointing 81 all out.

Finals Scoreboard

Group A: Cornwall Sports Partnership, Wendron, Falmouth 1, Truro College, Chacewater, Wadebridge

Group B: Newquay, Falmouth 2, St Austell, Beacon, Truro, Mount Hawke

Week 1 Sun 16 January Report

St Austell make strong start in first match Cornwall Cricket Centre is the venue for the re-born Cornwall Cricket Board Indoor Six-a-Side tournament for clubs and the competition is already underway, with four matches completed on Sunday. Twelve teams have entered and the organisers will be looking to build on this initial interest with a longer tournament next winter, starting in October/November.

The tournament is being played over 12 overs per side, maximum 3 overs per bowler. Teams can consist of a maximum of 8 players, but will bat with 6 and field with 6, giving an option for tactics. Scores of 60 or 70 can sometimes win a match, but good batting line-ups will expect to score over 100 and it is likely that 150 or more may be reached once or twice in the season.

A yellow leather ball is now being used, rather than the old red plastic version. Teams have been divided into two equal groups of 6 and will play all other teams in their group. Additionally, all teams will qualify to take part in either the Cup or Plate knockout stages in April.

In this week's opening games, the battle between two Premier League clubs saw St Austell power to victory over Truro by three wickets after being set 119 to win. Another top flight team to win was Falmouth, who beat Wadebridge by 19 runs, but they were indebted to rising star Anthony Angove, who contributed 65 of their all out total of 101. An upset, in terms of their 11-a-side standings, took place when Mount Hawke (Div. 4 West) surprised County 1 Beacon by 12 runs. Chacewater were also victorious, beating Wendron by one wicket in the new tournament's first ever match.

Results (Sunday 16 January):

Wendron 60, Chacewater 63-5; Chacewater won by 1 wicket.

Falmouth 101 (A Angove 65), Wadebridge 82-3; Falmouth won by 19 runs.

Truro 118, St Austell 120-3 (M Ellison 51*); St Austell won by 3 wickets.

Mount Hawke 102-4 (R Chynoweth 40*), Beacon 90-5 (J Thomas 40*); Mount Hawke won by 12 runs.

There were two exciting last ball finishes in the latest round of six-a-side matches at the Cornwall Cricket Centre. After a winning start last week, Mount Hawke looked to be controlling their game against CCL Premier League Newquay, but their opponents kept in touch and, needing five to win on the last delivery, Joe Crane straight drove a six to win the game. Truro College and Cornwall Sports Partnership, two composite sides with no League form to judge them by, each played a storming opening game last Tuesday, with CSP registering a most challenging total of 131 for 5 in their 12 overs, Matt South contributing 59. Control of the new yellow ball proved difficult for a number of bowlers on both sides and the students just snatched victory on the final ball, thanks to a four from James Rowe. The fielding of many of the players has been a feature of the opening weeks of the competition, with front runners St Austell being particularly impressive in this facet of the game. The Saints recorded their second win, this time against Beacon, as did Falmouth I, who defeated Wendron. Truro, losers in their first fixture, came back strongly and, with a reshuffled side, easily accounted for Falmouth's second team, Tim Marrion hitting a well-constructed 61.

Results Tuesday 25 January:

Falmouth I 97 (L Hoban 39), Wendron 39; Falmouth I won by 58 runs.

Cornwall Sports Partnership 131-5 (M South 59, C Hunkin 31*), Truro College 135-4 (J Rowe 47*, J Libby 42*); Truro College won by 2 wickets.

Sunday 30 January:

Beacon 85 (G Bone 2-9), St Austell 89-1 (G Bone 28*, M Ellison 26*, M Bone 22) ; St Austell won by 5 wickets.

Mount Hawke 110-4 (A Peters 30*), Newquay 113-5 (J Crane 37*); Newquay won by 1 wicket.

Truro 118 (T Marrion 61), Falmouth II 70-5 (H Roberts 31*); Truro won by 48 runs.

The third week of play in the Cornwall Cricket Board Six-a-Sides saw another powerful display from early pacesetters St Austell. Scores of over forty apiece from Simon Ellison and Mike Bone contributed to the big total of 149-4 in the allotted 12 overs. Liam Watson then ripped apart the opposing Newquay batting line-up, taking 3 wickets for 12 runs as five of the six wickets fell with just 18 on the board. Fellow CCL Premier side Truro are also looking strong in Group B, with Cornwall skipper Tom Sharp hitting a high quality 44 not out in their 39-run win over Beacon. Andrew Fairman's three-wicket haul put paid to any thoughts that the opposition had of posing a closer challenge. Sunday's other fixture was a disappointment for Falmouth II, though they pocket the 2 match points, as Mount Hawke conceded the match, being unable to produce the required team of six. The two Group B fixtures on Tuesday were much closer affairs, as Rob Harrison's 34 not out led the way in the Cornwall Sports Partnership's tight six-run win against Chacewater, who were right in the hunt until the final ball of the match. Truro College's youngsters gave another good account of themselves, but couldn't quite overhaul Wadebridge's solid, but attainable, target of 96-4.

Results Tuesday 8 February:

Cornwall Sports Partnership 86-4 (R Harrison 34*, M South 29*), Chacewater 80-5 (K Monk 30); CSP won by 6 runs.

Wadebridge 96-4 (A Gill 29), Truro College 83-5; Wadebridge won by 13 runs.

Sunday 13 February:

Falmouth II w/o Mount Hawke (conceded).

St Austell 149-4 (S Ellison 47*, M Bone 43*); Newquay 42 (L Watson 3-12); St Austell won by 107 runs.

Truro 117-5 (T Sharp 44*, T Marrion 38), Beacon 78 (A Fairman 3-19); Truro won by 39 runs.

This week's Cornwall Cricket Board Six-a-Sides fixtures were again closely fought encounters. In the best match, Falmouth's second team scraped home by one run against Newquay, despite rattling up the excellent score of 129 for no wicket, with four batsmen retiring on the mandatory 25 or more runs and the last pair not out. Newquay required 20 to win from the final over and five from the last ball, but could only manage a 3, leaving them just short. Steve Chapman had scored an excellent 50, but just ran out of time to clinch victory. Wendron's moderate total of 78 proved to be a reasonable test for Wadebridge, but the North-East Cornwall side eventually coasted home after losing 4 wickets. Earlier in the week, Falmouth's first team beat the Cornwall Sports Partnership team by 12 runs. Unfortunately, the other Group A match resulted in a walkover for Chacewater, when the students of Truro College could not raise a team. Competition for places in the main knockout competition is now hotting up in mid-table in both groups, as just one team in each group is winless and only Falmouth I and St Austell remain unbeaten, with "three from three" records so far. It looks very much as though they will be the teams everyone else will want to avoid in the knockout stages, but someone has to play them sometime!

Results Tuesday 22 February:

Chacewater w/o Truro College (conceded)

Falmouth I 103-2, Cornwall Sports Partnership 91; Falmouth I won by 12 runs.

Sunday 27 February:

Falmouth II 129-0 (S Kellow 28*, J Vanstone 27*, H Roberts 26*, K Rodda 25*), Newquay 128 (S Chapman 50); Falmouth II won by 1 run.

Wendron 78-3 (J Wearne 27*), Wadebridge 79-4 (J Maycock 27*); Wadebridge won by 2 wickets.

Beacon take first points

This week's Cornwall Cricket Board Six-a-Sides saw further progress by St Austell at the top of Group B. The Mid-Cornwall side, although slightly under-strength, comfortably defeated Mount Hawke in a very relaxed, sporting encounter, after bowling their opponents out for 75. Beacon, who for many years were a force to be reckoned with in the indoor game, picked up their first points in this new CCB tournament in a seven-run win over Falmouth II. A score of 99 looked a few runs below par, but some tight bowling meant that the Falmouth batsmen, though always within reach of the target, just couldn't score quickly enough in the final overs and were bowled out on the last ball of their allocated 12 overs.

Results Fri 4 March

Mount Hawke 75 (J Madeley 25), St Austell 76-4 (M Ellison 27*); St Austell won by 2 wickets.

Beacon 99-4 (M Floyd 27, J Gool 26), Falmouth II 92; Beacon won by 7 runs.

In this week's Cornwall Cricket Board Six-a-Sides Falmouth CC's two teams experienced contrasting results. Their second side was trounced by the rampant St Austell six, but Falmouth I recorded an 89-run win over Chacewater, with Jon Udy returning the unusually impressive bowling figures for an indoor game of 3 wickets for 3 runs. Falmouth had earlier raced to 122-2 in their 12 overs, Stefan Churcher, Adrian Noott and Udy all achieving retirement scores of 25 or more. St Austell and Falmouth I now head the qualifying groups and will be seeded to meet in the final of the tournament on April 10. In a high-scoring match on Sunday evening, Newquay came into some sort of form and rattled up the season's second-highest total of 142-5, with Chris Rippin (34*) and Tom Eggins leading the scoring. Beacon's reply was a good one, but they fell 15 runs short, despite good contributions from J Gool (36*) and J Thomas. In the day's second match, Truro posted a very useful 133 all out and, though Mount Hawke started well, the run-rate dropped in the second half of their innings and they closed on 90 all out. Truro's Kyle van Rooyen and Mount Hawke opener Richard Chynoweth shared the batting honours with 33 runs apiece. Last Tuesday, Cornwall Sports Partnership recorded a comfortable victory over Wadebridge, whilst Wendron came tantalisingly close to picking up their first points, falling just one run short of Truro College's 110-4.

Results Tue 8 March

Cornwall Sports Partnership 105, Wadebridge 70; CSP won by 35 runs.

Truro College 110-4, Wendron 109-5; Truro College won by 1 run.

Sixes reach knockout stages

The Cornwall Cricket Board Indoor Six-a-Sides have reached what is popularly known as the "business end" of the tournament, with all of the competing teams now entering the knockout Plate or Cup competitions on the next two Sunday afternoons. The one match of any significance this week saw Truro overcome Premier League rivals Newquay by 28 runs and consign them to the Plate competition. One unusual occurrence was that, in the two games played on Sunday, two bowlers, Matt South and Tom Brooks, each took four wickets. Former Cricket Development Officer Tim Marrion was the highest scoring batsman, with 48 not out.

The top three teams from each group now enter the main competition on April 10th, where CSP v Falmouth II and Truro v Wadebridge are the first two matches, the winners going on to meet St Austell and Falmouth I, respectively, in the semi-finals. Play at the Cornwall Cricket Centre will be from 2.00 to 8.30pm, as it will this Sunday, April 3rd, in the Plate. Newquay and Chacewater are the top seeds here, though Truro College are certainly "dangerous floaters", as the expression goes!

Results Sunday 27 March

Cornwall Sports Partnership 139, Wendron 68 (M South 4-16); CSP won by 71 runs.

Truro 118-5 (T Marrion 48*, T Brooks 4-18), Newquay 90; Truro won by 28 runs.
