Saints are indoor champions ... just!

Finals day Photos

There was a thrilling finish to the indoor cricket season at the Cornwall Cricket Centre on Sunday 1st April, as unbeaten favourites St Austell saw off a very dangerous Allstars by 13 runs. Captain Rob Harrison, marooned as the last 'live' batsman, was caught at the wicket by debutant Taylor Williams from the first ball of the final over. The East Cornwall side began the match in their usual confident style, thirty runs coming from the first two overs, but run outs caused them plenty of trouble and Scott Barrott was left high and dry with just 62 on the board. Allstars were in fine form, sharp in the field and up for the challenge against the team which had beaten them twice in the regular season. However, Barrott kept his head and saw out the second half of the innings on his own for what turned out to be a match-winning 40 not out. Gary Bone contributed 23 before being caught behind, one of Matt Rowe's two victims.

Faced with defending just 96, the Saints bowled economically to stay in the game, whilst Harrison (23) and Neil Callender (24) kept the score moving for Allstars. Barrott took 2 wickets for 14 runs as 75-3 became 83 all out and the Saints could celebrate what seemed an unlikely victory on more than one occasion during the match. St Austell had posted another of their huge totals in the semi-final and skittled out a shell-shocked Camborne for just 43, Simon Ellison taking 3-19. He also made 16, but was the only batsmen not to make a retirement score of 25 or over, as his brother Matt (35*), brothers Mike (34) and Gary Bone (27), Taylor Williams 31*) and Scott Barrott (26*) feasted on the Camborne attack. Falmouth started the second semi-final well, but skipper Adrian Noott and George Popperwell were then run out in quick order. Ed Farley made 27 and Liam Hoban 20 in their disappointing 86 all out. Allstars coasted to victory by 4 wickets, with Joe Crane (27*) and Chris Hunkin (25*) both scoring freely.

Earlier, in the County Division, Chacewater began the day with a 14-run victory over St Stephen, after posting a modest 93, of which James Holt scored 42. Kyle Willmott and Chris Harris both passed 20 for St Stephen, but wickets fell at regular intervals, two being caught by Bob Claydon behind the wicket. In the second semi-final, Harry Bolland completed a fine all-round performance, taking 3 wickets for 5 runs and scoring 30 with the bat, as Redruth wrapped up a 27-run win over St Erme, for whom Simon Cole also made 30. Redruth claimed the 'County' title, with a rather straightforward dismantling of Chacewater, who could only make 88 for 2 in the final when facing a rather daunting 143 for 5. Neil Ivamy (32), Nigel Hambly (30*) and Harry Bolland (25) were all in the runs. James Holt, 26 not out, ensured respectability for the losing team.

All four finalists received a set of medals and Cricket Centre Manager Mark Mitchell thanked them as representatives of all of the competing teams for the excellent spirit displayed throughout the six months of the Indoor League. Clubs will receive notification and entry forms for the new season, which begins in October, near the end of the summer season.

Results County Division, Semi- Finals: Chacewater 93-5, St Stephen 79 - Chacewater won by 14 runs; Redruth 104, St Erme 77 - Redruth won by 27 runs;

Final: Redruth 143-5, Chacewater 88-2 - Redruth won by 55 runs;

Premier Division, Semi-Finals: St Austell 171-3, Camborne 43 - St Austell won by 128 runs; Falmouth 1 86, Allstars 88-2 - Allstars won by 4 wickets;

Final: St Austell 96-5, Allstars 83 - St Austell won by 13 runs.

Sunday 9 October

Expanded indoor league underway

It's not long since the summer cricket season came to a close, but matches are already underway in the Cornwall Cricket Board's Indoor League at the Cornwall Cricket Centre, Truro. A full set of fixtures is due this Sunday, 16th October, and two games have already been played, with Rob Harrison's Allstars defeating Camborne by 6 wickets, having bowled them out for just 71. Matt South and Martin Jenkin, against his usual club, knocked off most off the runs required. Holders Falmouth 1 and Plate winners Beacon enjoyed a rather closer encounter later in the evening, with fortunes swaying on several occasions, before Falmouth finished strongly to get home by 19 runs.

Sixteen teams have entered the competition this time around, including newcomers St Stephen, St Erme, Hayle, Camborne, Redruth, St Blazey, Helston and St Gluvias. They will play in two round-robin groups of eight until January, when the top four in each section will move into the Premier Division and the other teams will play in the County Division. A knockout cup competition is also taking place in November/December, with 8 teams competing for a place in the ECB national rounds. The 12 overs per innings game is fast and exciting and the front runners are again likely to be Falmouth, Truro and St Austell, but it will be interesting to see which of the new entrants take to the game and provide a strong challenge, as someone surely will.

Results: Camborne 71, Allstars 72-0; Falmouth 111, Beacon 92

Sunday 16 October

Competitive matches in cricket's indoor league

In Sunday afternoon's three fixtures at the Cornwall Cricket Centre, all games were fairly competitive, but with comfortable winners in the end. Newcomers St Stephen were beaten by 5 wickets by Wadebridge, for whom Jack Butler was top scorer, with 27 not out. Redruth played twice, first losing out to St Blazey, a fellow new entrant, by four wickets, after being restricted to just 71 all out in an impressive bowling and fielding effort. Falmouth's first team then racked up the imposing score of 133 without loss, George Popperwell (29), Richard Kellow and Kieron Rodda (both 25) all reaching retirement scores. Although Aaron Wallace scored 48 not out, Redruth could never really put their opponents under great pressure and Falmouth eased home by 18 runs. The game was characterised by a return to the intelligent indoor batting style of nudging and placement, so often seen in games with the old-style red plastic ball. There is a little more movement for the bowlers from the yellow seamed ball, but thinking batsmen are clearly still able to create angles and keep the scoreboard ticking over from almost every delivery.

A weak, but very sporting, Hayle side played two matches in the evening session, going down to St Erme by 6 wickets, then facing a rather strong Truro outfit. The city side posted 158 for 1 in their 12 overs, with both Tim Marrion and Kyle van Rooyen scoring 31 not out. In the Hayle reply, bowler Alex Ridd took a hat-trick in his 3 for 4 off one over, a smart bit of thinking and catching by van Rooyen, posting himself in a wide slip position, accounting for the third victim after two batsmen were clean bowled. Next week's fixtures include Chacewater and Helston making their first appearances of the season. Unfortunately, St Gluvias CC has withdrawn from the six-a-sides, but another team will be replacing them in due course.

Results: St Stephen 70-5, Wadebridge 71-1 - Wadebridge won by 5 wickets; Redruth 71, St Blazey 74-2 - St Blazey won by 4 wickets; Falmouth 1 133-0, Redruth 115-5 - Falmouth 1 won by 18 runs; Hayle 72, St Erme 73-0 - St Erme won by 6 wickets; Truro 158-1, Hayle 30 - Truro won by 128 runs.

Sunday 23 October

St Austell coasted to victory over five-man Allstars in their first match in Group A of this year's CCB Sixes, but there were also problems in this group as Helston failed to put in an appearance and have now withdrawn from the competition. Better news, though, as a combined Perranarworthal / Mount Hawke team will now replace St Gluvias. In Group B, two games played in great spirit saw victories for St Erme and Beacon. Newcomers St Erme made it two wins out of two, defeating Chacewater with nearly three overs to spare, Liam Lombard and Simon Cole both putting in useful all-round performances. St Blazey posted a reasonably competitive total of 91 against Beacon, but their more experienced opponents eased home by 4 wickets.

Results: St Austell 117, Allstars 78-2 - St Austell won by 39 runs; Chacewater 86, St Erme 87-3 - St Erme won by 3 wickets; St Blazey 91, Beacon 97-2 - Beacon won by 4 wickets.

Sunday 31 October

Star individual performances at Indoor Sixes

The big match in the Cornwall Cricket Board's Indoor Six-a-Sides this week saw Falmouth 1 defeat Truro by 9 runs. Bowling and fielding of a high standard made life difficult for the batsmen on both sides. However, captain Adrian Noott held the Falmouth innings together, with 36 not out, and gave his side a fighting chance at 82-4. Truro's start was slow and, constantly pegged back with wickets being lost, the final 'live' batsman, Alex Ridd, needed 13 to win from the final over. However, he was run out from the third ball and Falmouth claimed a hard-earned victory.

In the triangular series of matches on Sunday afternoon, Camborne wrapped up wins over both St Stephen and Perran Hawke, a combination of Perranarworthal and Mount Hawke, who have replaced St Gluvias in the league. In the first match, Simon Newlands put in a useful all-round performance, scoring 26 not out and taking two wickets for nine runs, as St Stephen eased home after bowling Perran Hawke out for just 66. Gary Kos, with 37, made top score of the game for the losers. St Stephen recovered from a poor start against Camborne to make 91. Aiden Le Masurier's (55) with Tom Harris as his runner, being the fifth man out, put on a very impressive last wicket partnership of half the overall total. The new Premier League club, however, comfortably won the match by 5 wickets. Sam Pooley was their best performer, taking 2 for 11 and hitting 27 not out with the bat.

In the final afternoon fixture, Camborne then hit the challenging total of 129 all out, four of their batsmen reaching 25 or over, but it was Sam Pooley (4-19) who again took the headlines, polishing off the Perran Hawke batting line-up and ending the match with four wickets in four balls, one caught behind, followed three bowled. Later, Falmouth's second team came from behind, effectively, having recovered from 28 for 5, to beat Wadebridge. Falmouth's Scott Kellow scored 42 not out, to take his side to a half decent total of 70, but Wadebridge crumbled to 38 all out.

Results: Perran Hawke 66, St Stephen 67-2 - St Stephen won by 4 wickets; St Stephen 91, Camborne 92-1 - Camborne won by 5 wickets; Camborne 129, Perran Hawke 86 - Camborne won by 43 runs; Falmouth 2 70-5, Wadebridge 38 - Falmouth 2 won by 32 runs; Falmouth 1 82-4, Truro 73 - Falmouth 1 won by 9 runs.

Sunday 6 November

Leagues beginning to take shape

Beacon recorded two comfortable wins on Sunday afternoon, as the CCB Indoor Six-a-Side Tables began to take on some meaning, though one or two of the favourites have games to catch up, as two clubs have withdrawn. The great news is that both have been replaced and fixtures have been rescheduled for new entrants Perran Hawke and Camborne School of Mines. Both Chacewater and Hayle were swept aside relatively easily, with Beacon now topping Group B, on 20 points, ahead of unbeaten Falmouth 1, who have played a game fewer. Craig Thomas (30*) and some useful bowling and fielding did the damage against Chacewater and a similar display (J Thomas 29*) ensued against Hayle. Chacewater's openers, Burridge and James Holt, both reached 30 in their game with Redruth, but the higher level club also had two effective batsmen in Neil Ivamy and Nigel Hambly, who scored 39 and 31 not out respectively, to take them to victory by 26 runs.

The day's play ended with a thrilling finish as a weakened Wadebridge selection, who had earlier gone down meekly to newcomers Perran Hawke, came back strongly in the final overs to defeat Camborne by one run. Alek Gill batted very solidly for a very rare half-century in the Six-a-Sides. Wadebridge had lost early wickets to the promising Camborne youngsters, but Gill sensibly saw off the most threatening bowlers and scored a late flurry of runs to take the score to 84. Things still looked far from rosy for the east Cornwall side when their opponents had reached 34-0 from just 3 overs, but complacency appeared to set in. Camborne were pegged back impressively by young left-armer Jack Barton (15 runs from three overs) and Gill, who completed a fine all-round performance by taking 3-9. At the final ball, two runs were still required, but a run out saw Wadebridge picking up the winning points.

Results: Redruth 103, Chacewater 77 - Redruth won by 26 runs; Chacewater 66, Beacon 67-2 - Beacon won by 4 wickets; Beacon 108-3, Hayle 49 - Beacon won by 59 runs; Wadebridge 74-4, Perran Hawke 75-0 - Perran Hawke won by 6 wickets; Wadebridge 84, Camborne 83-5 - Wadebridge won by 1 run.

Sunday13 November

St Austell dish out record hammering

St Austell's six-a-side team handed out one of the most merciless beatings on Sunday afternoon, as poor Perran Hawke were bowled out for just twelve, with Scott Barrott proving unplayable, taking 5 wickets for 2 runs, but no hat-trick! Clearly, Perran Hawke had stoked Barrott's fire by dismissing him for a duck in St Austell's massive total, where brothers Gary and Mike Bone, together with Matt Ellison, had all hit scores in the mid-thirties. Falmouth's second side suffered almost as badly, when St Austell rattled up another big total, 154 for 4, brothers Bone again to the fore, Gary making 38* and Mike 37. Scott Barrott's field day continued, as he took a further 3 wickets for 17 runs.

It was a day of big wins, as Hayle's sporting but outclassed six made just 27 against St Blazey, who eased past the target without losing a wicket. St Blazey also beat St Erme, but in a much tighter affair, Paul Carne contributing 33 out of their total of 106 for 5. Tom Bunt scored 34 in the reply, but St Erme were 13 short at the end. The CCL Division 4 champions had a setback in terms of results this week, being defeated by Falmouth 1 in their next game as well, but they were competitive in both fixtures. St Erme's bowling performances were good, particularly against the confident Falmouth outfit, but their batting fell apart in that fixture, making just 43 all out.

Possibly the best game on Sunday was Falmouth 2's very good win over Allstars. Scott Kellow made 32 not out, then the dangerous Rob Harrison was dismissed for nought, Falmouth getting home by 13 runs. School of Mines just failed to record their first victory, falling 10 runs short against St Stephen, for whom Gates, Willmot and Chris Harris all reached 25+ retirement scores. Matt Surry did his best to get CSM home, but he was out for 50 on the last ball of the innings. On Thursday evening, CSM had been outclassed by Allstars, Rob Harrison (51*) and Josh Sharpe (33*) doing much of the scoring whilst, in Group B, Truro comfortably overcame Chacewater in a rearranged fixture.

Results: Allstars 164-3, School of Mines 62-4 - Allstars won by 102 runs; Truro 112-4, Chacewater 34 - Truro won by 78 runs; St Stephen 108-1, School of Mines 98 - St Stephen won by 10 runs; St Austell 176-5, Perran Hawke 12 - St Austell won by 164 runs; St Austell 154-4, Falmouth 2 43 - St Austell won by 111 runs; Falmouth 2 109-5, Allstars 96 - Falmouth 2 won by 13 runs; Falmouth 1 105-5, St Erme 43 - Falmouth 1 won by 62 runs; St Blazey 106-5, St Erme 93 - St Blazey win by 13 runs; Hayle 27, St Blazey 30-0 - St Blazey won by 6 wickets.

Sunday 20 November

Group tables taking shape

School of Mines were defeated by both St Austell and Falmouth 2 in last Thursday’s CCB Six-a-Side League matches, making just 59 and 69 runs batting first. St Austell followed up with a 21-run win over Wadebridge on Sunday, captain Gary Bone scoring 47 and Scott Barrott backing him up with an undefeated 31. Jack Butler contributed 26 to the reply, but Wadebridge just couldn’t keep the required run rate going as wickets fell at regular intervals. Group B’s only match this week was another comfortable win for Truro, who defeated Redruth by 69 runs, with four batsmen reaching retirement scores.

CSM again suffered in the next chapter of their initiation to the Indoor League, this time at the hands of Camborne, who rattled up the highest score of the season, 181 for 4. Ben Rule, 46*, Nick King (42*) and Simon Blackburn (40) all made merry with the bat, before the students were dismissed for just 27. Some club teams would perhaps give up the unequal struggle, but the CSM team have dutifully turned up for 5 matches in 2 weeks since joining the competition and will no doubt gain much from the experience. In another Group A match, Allstars recovered from being bowled out for 87 (Rob Harrison 32) to flatten St Stephen’s hopes, knocking over their batting line-up for a paltry 25. The final match of the evening was a very closely fought affair, with fortunes swinging to and fro, until Perran Hawke’s last pair of Tom Williams (37*) and Rob Atkinson (24*) saw them home with just 3 balls to spare. The result leaves Falmouth 2 in a tight race for second place in the group, level with Allstars and two points behind Camborne.

Results: CSM 59, St Austell 60-0 – St Austell won by 6 wickets; CSM 69-5, Falmouth 2 73-2 – Falmouth 2 won by 4 wickets; St Austell 120-5, Wadebridge 99 – St Austell won by 21 runs; Camborne 181-4, CSM 27 – Camborne won by 154 runs; Allstars 87, St Stephen 25 – Allstars won by 62 runs; Truro 139-3, Redruth 70 – Truro won by 69 runs; Falmouth 2 112-4, Perran Hawke 113-4 – Perran Hawke won by 2 wickets.

Sunday 27 November

Cup matches underway

Falmouth and Camborne eased into the CCB Indoor Sixes Knockout Cup semi-finals, comfortably accounting for Beacon and St Stephen in their first round matches on Thursday. Captain Adrian Noott (31*) steered Falmouth's innings to a decent 121 for 4, but Beacon could muster just 55 in reply, with Richard Kellow taking 3-20. In the second quarter-final, St Stephen's batting again proved their undoing, the east Cornwall side making 61 in reply to Camborne's 102-4. Youngsters Liam Weeks and Sam Pooley scored over half of the winners' runs.

Back in the League, Group B leaders Falmouth 1 eased past Chacewater's 73-4 without losing a wicket. Beacon had an entertaining game with St Erme, posting 126-3, with Matt Floyd top scorer on 42 not out. St Erme were always in with a chance, but ran out of time, ending 20 short, on 106-3 (Andy Wilkinson 28*, Simon Cole 25*). On Thursday, four more sides play for places in the Knockout Cup semi-finals: this competition provides the winners with a place in the ECB National Indoor Competition.

KO Cup Results: Falmouth 121-4, Beacon 55 - Falmouth won by 66 runs; Camborne 102-4, St Stephen 61 - Camborne won by 41 runs.

League Results: Beacon 126-3, St Erme 106-3 - Beacon won by 20 runs; Chacewater 73-4, Falmouth 1 74-0 - Falmouth 1 won by 6 wickets.

Sunday 4 December

Favourites stroll into semis

St Austell and Truro took their places in the CCB Indoor Sixes Knockout Cup with comfortable victories in Thursday's matches. The city side beat Wadebridge by 62 runs, thanks to Tim Marrion and Alex Ridd's scores of 33 and 31* and a bowling performance which dismissed Wadebridge for 52 in under 10 overs. St Austell posted the imposing total of 160 for 3 against St Erme. Three other batsmen reached retirement scores of 25 or more, but Matt Ellison was the star of the show with 53 not out. Simon Cole made a valiant 46 for the losing team, who were bowled out for 72, Liam Watson taking 2 wickets for 9 runs in three economical overs.

In Group B of the League, Truro climbed to within a point of Beacon in second place as they overcame St Blazey by 5 wickets. Star man on the night was Alex Ridd, who took 3-9 and followed this up with 27 not out. Neil Ivamy, Aaron Wallace and Nigel Hambly all got retirement scores for Redruth in their big total of 140 for 3 against bottom-placed Hayle, though the north coast side posted a respectable 75-2 in reply.

KO Cup Results: St Austell 160-3, St Erme 72 - St Austell won by 88 runs; Truro 114-4, Wadebridge 52 - Truro won by 62 runs.

League Results: Redruth 140-3, Hayle 75-2 - Redruth won by 65 runs; St Blazey 66, Truro 67-1 - Truro won by 5 wickets.

Sunday 11 December

Place in ECB Indoor Cup at stake

Falmouth, Camborne, St Austell and Truro play at the Cornwall Cricket Centre on Thursday evening, with one of them set to claim a place in the ECB Indoor Sixes Knockout Cup in the New Year. Camborne have an improving young team and will be looking to cause a bit of an upset in dislodging three very experienced indoor sides. Falmouth are the current Cornish champions, but both Truro and St Austell are in strong form and any prediction regarding the likely Cup winners would be difficult. Play begins in the semi-finals at 6pm, with the final due to finish by around 9.45.

Camborne and St Austell played a dress rehearsal for a potential final when they met in Group A of the Indoor League on Sunday. The group leaders stormed to a 52-run win after another high-scoring batting display, with Mike Bone (42*) and Matt Ellison (40) leading the way. Camborne were never really in the hunt, but put in a good bowling and fielding effort to keep St Austell in reasonable check after they had scored 56 from just 4 overs. In the other game, Camborne SoM recorded their first league point in reaching 100 runs against Wadebridge, thanks mainly to Ed Walker's 58. A close game ended with Wadebridge the winners by 13 runs

The League programme continue with two more games this Sunday, then takes a break over the festive period, before teams resume hostility on Sunday 8th January.

Results: Wadebridge 115-1, CSM 102 - Wadebridge won by 13 runs: St Austell 135-5, Camborne 83-4 - St Austell won by 52 runs.

Sunday 18 December

St Austell claim Cup win

After their League meeting the previous Sunday, Camborne did indeed meet St Austell in the CCB Sixes Knockout Cup Final on Thursday, having turned over the usually consistent Falmouth outfit in the semi-final. Chasing the fairly par score of 113 for 4, Camborne shot off the blocks through Liam Weeks (27) and Nick King (33*). However, after Sam Pooley had also contributed 24, wickets started to tumble and 2 runs were still required with just the single wicket of King remaining. A wide and another single were enough, though, and the young side were joined by favourites St Austell, who amassed another big total against Truro, who made just 58. Gary Bone contributed a fine 55 not out and Mike Bone 47 as no bowler took a wicket, all those dismissed being run out.

The final saw another ruthless display from the clay country side. Batting first, they made154 for 3 this time, Scott Barrott (33*), Matt Ellison (32*) and Liam Watson (31*) the top scorers. Sam Pooley made a valiant 31 not out for Camborne, but Mike Bone's 2-10 in three tight overs was the pick of the bowling for St Austell, who restricted their opponents to just 67 for 5. Gary Bone's team now travel to Devon on February 12th for the First Round of the ECB national competition.

On Sunday, St Stephen defeated Falmouth's second team by 3 runs in a Group A match which could certainly have gone either way. Chris Harris made 28 for the winners and Julian Osborne 27 for Falmouth, but some interesting running and a surfeit of extras made for an error-strewn, though entertaining, game. In the other scheduled fixture, Allstars received a walkover, as Perran Hawke were unable to raise a side.

Results KO Cup Semi-Finals: Falmouth 113-4, Camborne 114-5 - Camborne won by 1 wicket; St Austell 159-4, Truro 58 - St Austell won by 101 runs; Final: St Austell 154-3, Camborne 67-5 - St Austell won by 87 runs.

League, Group A: St Stephen 94, Falmouth 2 91-5 - St Stephen won by 3 runs.

Sunday 8 January

Falmouth & Truro march on

The CCB Indoor Six-a-Side League resumed at the weekend, with Truro comfortably beating Beacon by 78 runs in what seemed, on paper, to be a close encounter in the battle for second place in Group B. Kyle van Rooyen and Adam Pascoe each scored 32 not out for the winners, closely followed by wides, with the Beacon attack a little rusty after the mid-season break! Hayle remained pointless after their encounter with group leaders Falmouth 1, for whom Ed Farley scored 45* and Adrian Noott 37*. Julian Osborne picked up three wickets for just five runs as Hayle were restricted to a total of just 49, but at least they avoided being bowled out. The evening match was a well-balanced affair between Redruth and St Erme, with the former recording a 21-run win after posting 111 for 4, though Liam Lombard rallied the losers with a neatly constructed 40.

Results: Truro 143-4, Beacon 65-4 - Truro won by 78 runs; Falmouth 1 148-3, Hayle 49-5 - Falmouth 1 won by 99 runs; Redruth 111-4, St Erme 90 - Redruth won by 21 runs.

Fixtures: Sunday 15 January - 3.00pm Falmouth 2 v Camborne, 4.15pm St Austell v St Stephen, 7.00pm Allstars v Wadebridge, 8.15pm Perran Hawke v CSM.

Sunday 15 January

Group A completed

The first stage of the CCB Indoor Six-a-Side League is now almost complete, as Group A drew to a close last weekend. St Austell cruised past a young and plucky St Stephen outfit by 85 runs, with Gary Bone scoring 54 not out, Liam Watson 34 and Scott Barrott taking 4 wickets for just 7 runs. However, fourteen-year old Tom Harris was delighted to take 3 wickets against the Premier League club. Falmouth seconds were well beaten by Camborne, scoring just 71 for 3 (M Bacon 28*) and going down by three wickets with more than four overs to spare. Wadebridge became the fourth and final qualifiers for the "Premier" Division, starting next month, when they overcame Allstars in a tense finish. Allstars were dismissed for 83 (Rob Harrison 25) and Wadebridge, needing 30 from the last 4 overs, got home with 3 balls to spare, Dan Walker contributing 28*.

Results: Falmouth 2 71-3, Camborne 75-3 - Camborne won by 3 wickets; St Austell 128-5, St Stephen 43 - St Austell won by 85 runs; Allstars 83, Wadebridge 84-2 - Wadebridge won by 4 wickets; Perran Hawke w/o v CSOM.

Fixtures: Sunday 22 January - 3.00pm Redruth v Beacon, 4.15pm Falmouth 1 v St Blazey, 7.00pm Chacewater v Hayle, 8.15pm St Erme v Truro.

Sunday 22 January

First round matches completed

All qualifiers are now known for the second stage of the CCB Indoor Six-a-Sides, with St Blazey taking the final place in the 'Premier' Division, in spite of a loss to unbeaten Falmouth 1. Redruth were, unfortunately, unable to field a side against Beacon and will now play in the County Division. Hayle conceded to Chacewater, but the final game of the weekend saw Truro (K van Rooyen 35*, A Pascoe 32, A Senior 32*) beat St Erme by 74 runs.

The competition now splits into two, with the Premier and County Divisions each running two groups of four teams. These groups begin on 5th February and end with a Finals Day on Sunday 1st April.

Results: Beacon w/o v Redruth; Falmouth 1 117-3, St Blazey 75-2 - Falmouth 1 won by 42 runs; Chacewater w/o v Hayle; Truro 135-4, St Erme 61 - Truro won by 74 runs.

Next Fixtures: Sunday 5 February - Premier Division: 3.00pm St Austell v St Blazey, 4.15pm Allstars v Truro, County Division: 7.00pm Falmouth 2 v Hayle, 8.15pm St Stephen v St Erme.

Thrills aplenty on all Saints day

There was a fascinating start to the second stage of the CCB Indoor Sixes on Sunday as, in the first game of the 'Premier' Division, hot favourites St Austell were given a massive fright before closing out a ten-run win over neighbours St Blazey, whose summer 1st XI play in Division 2 East. The underdogs got off to a great start, taking wickets regularly as the usually dominant St Austell batting line-up had a shaky return to competition. They will hope to be in better form next week, when they take on the Devon champions in the first round of the ECB national competition. Saviour on the day was Scott Barrott, primarily a bowler, who held the innings together with 38 not out, taking the score to 86 for 5. Mike Bone then took four wickets, to restrict St Blazey to 76 all out, but with another full over remaining in which the winning runs might have been found.

The final match of the evening, this time in the 'County' Division, was even closer, with near neighbours and close rivals in the outdoor game St Stephen and St Erme providing some great value entertainment. St Erme made 116 all out in their twelve overs, Tom Bunt and Liam Lombard each contributing 36 to the total. The St Stephen innings started steadily enough, but overs five to seven were rather unproductive, leaving them needing 55 from the final 5 overs. Gates, Newland and Chris Harris all made decent contributions, but the latter was run out with four deliveries remaining and 7 to win. Then, two balls to go and 3 needed, youngster Tom Harris put the ball over the bowler's head for six runs and a very exciting game was won with a ball to spare.

In another eye-catching Premier Division result, Truro were defeated by a stronger than usual Allstars six, who bowled their city opponents out for just 62, then comfortably passed the score with three overs to spare. Chris Hunkin scored an unbeaten 27 for the winners. Falmouth II hammered the weak Hayle outfit by 80 runs in the other County Division fixture.

Results: St Austell 86-5, St Blazey 76 - St Austell won by 10 runs; Truro 62, Allstars 63-3 - Allstars won by 3 wickets; Falmouth 2 148-1, Hayle 68-2 - Falmouth 2 won by 80 runs; St Erme 116, St Stephen 120-3 - St Stephen won by 3 wickets.

Next Fixtures: Sunday 12 February - Premier Division: 3.00pm Wadebridge v Falmouth 1, 4.15pm Camborne v Beacon, County Division: 7.00pm CSOM (Tremough) v Redruth, 8.15pm Perran Hawke v Chacewater

Desperate Dan saves Camborne

A desperate stroke from Dan Stephens rescued a tie for Camborne against local rivals Beacon in the CCB Sixes Premier Division on Sunday. With eighteen needed to win from the final over, then seven from the last ball, Dan's driven six brought the scores exactly level, even on wickets. He scored an amazing 71 out of his team's 93 for 5 after being left high and dry by his team-mates' clatter of wickets. Beacon's Dan Mellor had scored half of his side's runs as they posted a tantalisingly reachable target but, until Stephens' heroics, this looked way beyond their opponents. In the same group, Falmouth 1 escaped a shock, as they just managed to defend a modest 96 all out against Wadebridge. The east Cornwall side hadn't looked like getting close, but Caleb Rowe (41*) led a spirited charge in the last two overs, only just coming up short. Matt Surry had earlier scored 32 for Falmouth and Scott Kellow took 2 wickets for 13 runs from his 3 overs allocation.

In the County Division, there were comfortable wins for Redruth and Chacewater, over CSM and Perran Hawke respectively. Redruth posted 112 for 5 in their 12 overs (Jenkin 39) and CSM were never in the hunt, ending on 76-5. Chacewater's first win came in a game where they showed greatly improved form, reaching 118-5, mainly thanks to opener Simon Burrell's undefeated 40. Perran Hawke took the opportunity of some 'net' batting against some tight bowling and crept to just 51-2 by the end.

Good news, too, for Cornish cricket! At Exeter, in the play-off round of the ECB National competition, Cornish cup holders St Austell saw off the challenge of Devon side Cornwood, reaching their target of 102 with four of the twelve overs to spare. They now travel to Taunton on February 26 for the SW Regional Finals. Cornwood 101, St Austell 102-1 (M Ellison 25 ret, G Ellison 25ret, S Ellison 25ret)

Results: Falmouth 1 96, Wadebridge 93-5 - Falmouth 1 won by 3 runs; Beacon 93-5, Camborne 93-5 - Match Tied; Redruth 112-5, CSM 76-5 - Redruth won by 36 runs; Chacewater 118-5, Perran Hawke 51-2 - Chacewater won by 67 runs.

Next Fixtures: Sunday 19 February - Premier Division: 3.00pm St Austell v Truro, 4.20pm Allstars v St Blazey, County Division: 5.30pm Falmouth 2 v St Erme, 6.40pm St Stephen v Hayle.

Sunday 19 February

In the Group 1 of the Premier Division, St Austell and Allstars comfortably overcome Truro and St Blazey, respectively, to qualify for the CCB Sixes semi-finals with a game to spare. Brothers Gary and Mike Bone each scored 26 for St Austell, the latter also restricting Truro to just eight runs in his three overs. Allstars made just 97 against St Blazey, but restricted their opponents to 61-4, 'skipper' Rob Harrison taking 2-9 from his three overs. Joe Crane (28) and Neil Callender (29) were the main run-getters for the cosmopolitan side.

Falmouth 2 suffered a setback, going down by 5 wickets after being bowled out for a paltry 54 by St Erme. Andrew Varker made 26 of those, but it was nowhere near enough, the winning runs taking just 7.4 overs. Hayle failed to put in an appearance against St Stephen in the final match of the evening.

Results: St Austell 116, Truro 68 - St Austell won by 48 runs; Allstars 97, St Blazey 61-4 - Allstars won by 36 runs; Falmouth 2 54, St Erme 55-1 - St Erme won by 5 wickets; St Stephen w/o Hayle.

St Austell miss out in tight SW Final

St Austell, Cornwall Cup winners, took part in the South West Regional Finals of the ECB Indoor competition on Sunday afternoon, at Taunton. After two incredibly tight finishes, St Austell fell out of the competition at the quarter-final stage, losing the regional final to Poole Town (Dorset) on fewer wickets in a tied match. Playing with the standard red plastic ball, rather than the more advanced yellow one used at Truro, the Cornish team found getting used to it a little difficult. However, in the first match, against Bridgwater, Gary Bone, left as the lone undefeated batsman, just managed to score the nine runs needed from the final over, running a bye on the last delivery. The regional final saw both teams end on 97 runs but, crucially, Poole had lost one wicket fewer than St Austell and they will now go on to the Indoor School at Lord’s for the National Finals.

In Sunday’s CCB Indoor Sixes Falmouth’s first team beat Camborne fairly comfortably, after posting a decent 120 for 3 in their innings, with Adrian Noott, Julian Osborne and Scott Kellow all making good contributions. Harry Roberts then took two wickets as the Camborne reply never really got going. Beacon were involved in another last-ball drama after their tie with Camborne, just sneaking home this time. Wadebridge made 100 for 4 in their 12 overs (Charlie Ellis 25) and kept themselves in the match with some tight bowling, notably from veteran Richard Centini. With Matt Floyd, James Gool and Dan Mellor all making good scores, ten runs were required from the final over and three on the last ball, with a leg glance just doing the trick for Beacon.

Results.

ECB National Indoor (SW Finals), Semi-Final: Bridgwater 77-4, St Austell 78-5 (G Bone 24no) – St Austell won by 1 wicket; Final: St Austell 97-4 (G Bone 30no, Poole Town 97-3 – Match tied, Poole Town won on fewer wickets lost.

Sunday 4 March

Finals taking shape

Just one game was completed in the CCB Sixes this week and a close affair saw Truro edge to a six-run win over St Blazey in the Premier Division, largely thanks to a carefully constructed knock of 47 not out by Adam Pascoe. Tom Trethewey's three overs cost just eight runs, with one wicket. St Blazey were always just 'behind the clock' and their side, impressively competitive amongst some bigger clubs, fell agonisingly short once again. However, both teams now bow out of the competition. Camborne SoM were unable to travel for their fixture against Chacewater, who will now go through to the County Division semi-finals on 1st April.

Results. Premier: Truro 97-5, St Blazey 91-4 - Truro won by 6 runs; County: Chacewater w/o CSM.

Premier Division groups completed

The Premier Division groups were rounded up on Sunday in the CCB Indoor League. Group A leaders St Austell and Allstars met to decide the final placings, as both were unbeaten. Although pushed very hard in the final few overs, St Austell just managed a win by six runs, Matt Ellison and Gary Bone their chief run-getters and Matt Rowe making a fighting 31 for the Allstars. Wadebridge, short of players, had to concede against Camborne, leaving Beacon needing at least two bonus points against Falmouth 1 to qualify. A low-scoring affair looked tilted Beacon's way for most of the match, in spite of good contributions from Adrian Noott and Scott Kellow. 98 to win was a very average chase, but the Beacon lads lost wickets at crucial times and were bowled out for 89. In the Premier Division semi-finals on April 1, St Austell will meet Camborne, followed by Falmouth 1 versus Allstars. Next week sees the conclusion of the County Division groups, with Falmouth 2 or St Stephen looking to join St Erme, Chacewater and Redruth in the last four.

Results. Group 1: St Austell 126-5, Allstars 120-5 - St Austell won by 6 runs; Camborne w/o Wadebridge; Group 2: Falmouth 1 97-1, Beacon 89 - Falmouth 1 won by 8 runs.

Sunday 18 March

Indoor finalists all sorted

Only one fixture was played in the CCB Indoor Six-a-Sides this week, with Redruth comfortably passing Chacewater's 90 in just 8.3 overs. For Chacewater, left-handers Simon Burrell (36*) and Matt Philips (28*) both made good scores, but their bowlers weren't on their best form and Nigel Hambly (25*) guided Redruth to victory. Both teams, however, progress to the County Division semi-finals on Sunday week, where they will meet the challenge of village sides St Stephen and St Erme. In the Premier competition, Camborne and Rob Harrison's Allstars will be looking to topple favourites St Austell and last season's champions Falmouth. The action gets under way at the Cornwall Cricket Centre at 12.30pm on Sunday 1st April.
