Season 2002 Leading runscorers for Cornwall in the Minor Counties Championship this year were the skipper Tom Sharp and Ben Price, who both passed the 300 run mark. Price averaged over 50 and hit 4 fifties in his 8 innings. The bowling was led by Charlie Shreck whose magnificent return of 41 wickets was the second best in the entire 2002 Championship and the best return by a Cornish bowler since Alan Watts took 43 wickets in 1983 (in 9 games as opposed to the 6 games played this year). Cornwall used 19 players in the Championship with debuts made by Piran Holloway, Chris Hunkin, WayneVincent and Ben Smeeth. No fewer than 10 batsmen hit Championship fifties plus Hunkin in a one day game. Seven players - Sharp, Stephens, Stoddard, Gavin Edwards, Pearce, Price and Shreck all improved on their highest individual county scores. Cornwall won 3 of the 6 games – the first time 50% of games have been won since 1976. Successes were gained over Dorset, Wales MC and Shropshire. The final position of 4th has only been matched twice in the last 25 years – in 1985 and 1995. In one day games the ECB 38 Counties campaign saw all four games affected by the weather. Not a ball was bowled against Somerset CB. There were defeats on scoring rate against Dorset and Wiltshire and defeat by 4 wickets in a well contested game against Devon. In the Cheltenham & Gloucester Trophy there was a creditable performance against Worcestershire, where Shreck equalled the County’s one day record of 5-19. The end of season qualifying games for 2003 saw thrilling wins over Somerset CB and Wales MC. The reward is a 3rd Round tie at home to Kent next season. It has been announced that the game will be played at Truro C C on Wednesday 7th May. The date is three weeks earlier than last season and some seven weeks earlier than the old traditional end of June date.
