Cornwall County Cricket Club AGM 2011 held at the Municipal Buildings Truro on Wed 2 March
The captain of Cornwall County Cricket Club, Tom Sharp, completed a memorable year by being re-elected unopposed at the Club’s 108th Annual Meeting.. He becomes only the second player in history to captain the county for a tenth successive year. In 2010 he topped both the batting and bowling averages and became the first Cornish player to achieve the double of 3,000 runs and 150 wickets. He also completed fifty championship games as captain and played for the ECB Unicorns in the Clydesdale Bank 40 game against Somerset at Exmouth. In presenting the Committee’s Report the Club Chairman Col. Ronnie Potts also stated that the weather played a major part in the championship campaign again. The county ended in fifth place being undefeated with two wins and four draws, three of which were badly affected by the weather. The two wins saw Oxfordshire convincingly defeated at Falmouth by ten wickets, in less than one and a half days. The season ended with a tense win over Berkshire at Truro, thus denying the visitors the Western title on the final afternoon as an unbeaten century from Sharp helped achieve a three wicket win. There was a record aggregate of 1,324 runs in the high scoring draw at Corsham against Wiltshire where Sharp, Dan Davis and David Roberts all hit centuries. The games against Devon, Shropshire and Dorset were all badly rain affected with the county only batting once in each game. No-one made a championship debut during 2010, the first time that has happened since Cornwall entered the Championship in 1904. Sharp hit 417 runs at an average of 69.50 followed by David Roberts with 329 runs at 41.12, Dan Davis 251 runs at 35.85 and Matt Robins with 260 runs at 32.50. Sharp took 23 wickets at 20.95 and Sam Hockin 20 wickets at 27.40. In the MCCA Trophy the highlight was the nine wicket win over Buckinghamshire at Marlow where David Roberts (130no) and Matt Robins (143) put on 287 for the first wicket. Roberts also hit 113 and 84 in the group games. Despite beating Devon and Bucks convincingly the other two games saw narrow defeats, preventing progress to the knock out stages. The game at Wiltshire was lost by 5 runs with the Duckworth Lewis method used for the first time in a Cornwall game. Then the game with Wales Minor Counties was dramatically tied at St Austell as Cornwall went out of the competition by virtue of losing more wickets. Colonel Potts also congratulated Dan Davis on the recent announcement that he had been included in the 29 man ECB ‘Unicorns’ squad for 2011 in the Clydesdale Bank 40 over competition. The side will again be skippered by Cornwall professional Keith Parsons. Treasurer Keith Hore reported a deficit of £1,313 on the year which was at least an improvement of £663 on the previous year. That was thanks to the valued sponsorship of Kelly’s of Cornwall who became the club’s first major sponsor last year. Mr Hore was pleased to announce that Kelly’s would be continuing their support in 2011. However despite this sponsorship overall income was down by £450 with a reduction in the ECB grant and no income from a Somerset T20 game last year. The Expenditure was reduced by £1,118 over the year. Match and Tour expenses were virtually identical to the 2009 season and the Under 21’s, Senior Women and Over 50’s expenses were reduced by £2,200. There was an increase though in the professional’s fees and costs of balls, equipment, kit and clothing. Mr Hore hoped that the Income and Expenditure account would be able to break even in the forthcoming year to halt the steady decline in losses in recent years. The President, the Reverend Canon Ken Rogers who took the chair, presented the Canynge Caple Cup for the outstanding cricketer of 2010 to Tom Sharp. Matthew Rowe won the Canynge Caple Colt’s (Under 21’s) Cup. The Arthur Lugg Cup for outstanding services was presented to the Secretary of eleven years, Mrs Anita George MBE, JP. The Caerhays Cup, for the highest partnership of the season, was won by David Roberts and Matt Robins for their stand of 287 against Buckinghamshire at Marlow. The Donald Cocks Cup for fielding went to Chris Hunkin. The Ron Tither Memorial Cup for Under 21 bowling was won by Sam Hockin for a third successive year. All officers were re-elected unopposed: President - Reverend Canon K Rogers; Chairman - Col. R W Potts; Hon. Secretary - Mrs Anita George MBE, JP; Hon Treasurer – RK Hore JP; Captain – TG Sharp; Team Sec / Manager - GR Furse; Under 21's Manager – S. Hooper. There was one change to the General Committee with Richard Sharp elected to replace the late Mike Cundy.
