Cornwall's participation in the C & G Trophy has come to an end.

Following a recommendation from its Domestic Structure Interim Working Party the ECB have announced that from the 2006 season a competition re-vamp will see the exclusion of Minor Counties. The C & G knockout format is to be replaced by a two-league system restricted to the First Class counties - plus Ireland and Scotland. Teams will compete in two conferences, north and south. Each team will play nine 50-over matches against the other teams in its conference with all games played in coloured clothing with a white ball. The northern winner will play the southern winner in the traditional Final at Lord's in August. The aim is to increase the amount of 50-over cricket played at county level, and thus give more player exposure to the One-Day International format of the game.

Minor Counties, in varying numbers, have been part of the premier one-day competition since the Gillette Cup commenced in 1963. Nat West took over sponsorship in 1981 before the C&G Building Society in 2001. Cornwall had eight memorable clashes against the 'big boys' over the years. In the seventies Glamorgan and the star studded Lancashire visited Truro. There was a trip to Derbyshire in the eighties before back to back visits to St Austell by Middlesex and Warwickshire respectively in the mid nineties. Recent years have seen Sussex, Worcestershire and Kent journey to the county. Defeat in Amsterdam against the Netherlands meant Cornwall didn't qualify to play first class opposition last season. They also narrowly missed out for this year when entry was revised to include only the top eight counties in a combined western and eastern table.

The future total exclusion has come as a big disappointment to the County Club Committee. At its recent meeting the Chairman, Col. Ronnie Potts, reported that it was a blow to local spectators who will in future be denied the opportunity to see the top players play in the County. It was also bad news financially as these games are the only real opportunity to raise vital substantial funds, without which it is difficult to see how Minor Counties cricket will survive.

The bad news from the ECB continues with the announcement of further cutbacks in the annual grant for championship matches - following the withdrawal of grants towards Under-21 and Over-50 matches in recent years - and the chairman commented "It would appear that the ECB were moving inexorably towards the total elimination of Minor Counties cricket".

Cornwall County Cricket Club's Honorary Secretary, Mrs Anita George J.P., has become the first woman to be elected onto the Minor Counties Cricket Association's Management Committee. She was one of four elected members at the Association's recent December meeting held at Lord's Cricket Ground. Having been proposed by Norfolk CCC she was elected as a Western Section representative along with Dorset's Ken House. Mrs George was appointed Cornwall Secretary, in succession to Rev. Canon Ken Rogers, in 2000. She served for over 35 years as joint secretary/ treasurer, with her husband Peter, at both St Buryan CC and to the West Penwith Evening League, of which she is a life member
