Cornwall v Berkshire Preview

Cornwall rounded off their Minor Counties Championship season with a three wicket win at Truro to deny Berkshire the Western Division title. After a delayed start Berkshire declared on their overnight total setting Cornwall 263 to win. Keith Parsons made 62 and Chris Hunkin 31 but it was skipper Tom Sharp that played the match winning innings making an excellent 111 not out. Mark Horwell helped to add 29 in a tense eighth wicket stand to seal victory with an hour to spare. Dorset are the western champions with Cornwall, the only other unbeaten team, finishing fifth.

Cornwall are 18 points off the pace and must win their final two games to have any chance of winning the division.

Devon v Cornwall

Day 1

Devon recovered from 85-4 thanks to Bobby Dawson's 77 off 168 balls. David Lye (44), Sandy Allen (48) and Trevor Anning (56) all made useful runs down the order. Tom Sharp took three for 47 with two apiece for Sam Hockin, Kelvin Snell and Rob Harrison. Alex Smeeth left the field with the recurrence of a hamstring injury as did Chris Hunkin (feeling unwell). Cornwall raced to 98-2 off 20 overs at the close with Matt Robins hitting eight boundaries in his 38 before being caught off Anning. Thomas was dismissed for 12. No play due to persistent rain.

Day 3

Further showers prevented any play until 1.40pm on the third day. Dan Davis (62) and Kelvin Snell (32) took their third wicket stand to 149 but from thereon it became a procession as the Duchy were dismissed for 213 at tea. Anning 4-30. Sharp was undefeated on 36 and in doing so became only the fourteenth Cornish player to reach 3,000 championship runs. A more significant milestone is that he is the first Cornish player to achieve the double of 3,000 runs and 150 wickets.
