MCCA Trophy 2005 Semi Final

Wiltshire v Cornwall at Corsham on Sunday 24th July / Mon 25th July2005

Wiltshire beat Cornwall by 5 wickets (play carried over to the reserve day)

Cornwall 216-9 Wiltshire 219-5 (47.4overs)

Cornwall have missed out on a first ever trip to Lord's, when they lost their MCCA Trophy semi-final at Corsham on Monday against Wiltshire. The margin in the end was comprehensive enough, by five wickets with fourteen balls to spare. However it could all have been so different, with a little more fortune and had Cornwall had the 'rub of the green' on the day - or two days as it turned out. Heavy morning rain on Sunday which didn't stop until 1pm was followed by a magnificent effort by the Corsham groundstaff to achieve 2.50pm start. The delay however caused Cornwall a major problem with Justin Stephens being unable to play on the allocated reserve day. It meant Nick George, who was on the ground, being named in the team to bolster the seam attack, with Ben Price, as in the quarter-final, doing the twelfth man duties. Tom Sharp then loss the toss and Cornwall were invited to bat. Neil Edwards looked in good touch crashing some cover drives to the boundary before being caught behind off Kevin Nash for 20 at 35 in the ninth over. David Roberts came in and was soon also finding the boundary. He was looking in great nick until pulling a long hop to James Hayward at square leg, having made 21 off 16 balls. Cornwall were scoring at 5 an over but suffered a couple of vital blows. Anthony Penberthy was lbw to Mike Coles for 10 then Neil Curnow was run out looking for a second run that would have given him 50. He had hit a six and 7 fours off 69 balls. Cornwall were 111 for 4 in the 26th over and the home team sensed better things. They came in the form of Gary Thomas being run out when looking for a second run, to his great dismay. Then Tom Sharp lobbed Richard Bedbrook to Russell Rowe at short mid wicket.

The Duchy were struggling at 151 for 6 having lost four key wickets for 59 runs and with over 14 overs remaining. Ryan Driver was holding the other end together. Cornwall then suffered a late order collapse with four wickets falling in five balls. Chris Hunkin skied to long leg then Karl Turner and Mark George fell in the same Mike Coles over both being caught behind by Neil Shardlow. Eight overs remained and at least the last pair of Nick George and Driver saw them out to add a valuable 34. George made 14 and Driver ended on 55 off 91 balls. Crucially though Cornwall had to survive rather than accelerate over the second half of their innings. The home team bowled to their field well. Coles took 3 for 45 with Bedbrook, Nash, Hibberd and Golding all taking a wicket apiece. The general consensus was that on the smallish Station Road ground, surrounded by Cotswold stone, with it's short 50 metre boundaries and quick, sloping outfield that at least 250 was needed, if not more. As the weather closed in again there was time for just 2 overs before play ended for the day with Russell Rowe hitting a boundary.

As feared the 217 target didn't prove to be quite enough on the second day. Cornwall got the much needed early breakthrough, under the overcast skies, when Ryan Driver got Russell Rowe to drive to Mark George at mid on, who held the comfortable catch. Mike Coles joined Damian Shirazi who was batting well to continued his fine recent form. The B.A.T. Sports left hander looked impressive finding the boundary regularly. Coles at the other end was more circumspect and took 41 balls to get into double figures. Nick George bowled his 10 over spell tidily for 30 runs. Shirazi dominated the parnership which added 107 before he dragged on a Driver delivery. His 68 off 69 balls had included 10 fours. Coles came out of his shell putting Mark George into the Melksham road in his first over. The home team were looking well on the way to victory when Mark George trapped Coles lbw for 47 to make it 165 for 3 in the 38th over. Steve 'Reggie' Perrin' flashed at Anthony Penberthy and was held behind by keeper Karl Turner for 5. At the other end Baqar Rivzi impressed hitting a six and 5 fours in his 36 off just 29 balls to ensure the required rate was kept in control. He eventually skied Mark George to Driver at long on but he'd done the job with only 27 required off the last 9 overs. James Golding and Richard Bedbrook saw their side home with some scampered singles plus five boundaries to relieve the tension, loudly cheered by the home contingent. The winning boundary came off the fourth ball of the 48th over sending Wiltshire to the Lord's final in August. Mark George took 2 for 40 and Driver 2 for 44.

Cornwall are through to the second round of this season's MCCA Trophy. They set up a meeting with old rivals Devon following Sunday's excellent three wicket win at Bournemouth, in the MCCA Trophy against Dorset. The cross Tamar clash will be at Falmouth on Sunday June 12th. A home semi-final will follow for the winners. In a fairy tale comeback it was one of Cornwall favourite cricketing sons, Anthony Penberthy, who was the hero. Sixteen years after his last appearance for the Duchy, before embarking on an illustrious first class career with Northamptonshire, the former Troon all rounder hit a match winning 94 at Dean Park. Needing the reasonable ask of 211 off a full 50 overs Cornwall got off to a decent start through Gary Thomas (18) and Carl Gazzard (34) who added 41 for the first wicket. Both fell to Richard Pineo and this was followed by David Roberts being caught and bowled at 60-3.

The game swung into Cornwall's favour as Penberthy and Tom Sharp put together a stand of exactly 100 over the course of 25 overs. Sharp fell for 26 then in Pineo's same over Chris Hunkin was unfortunate to play on. Needing 66 off the last 10 overs and 36 off the last 5 overs the game was still in the balance. Martin Pearce hit a four in his 12 runs off just 10 balls. Truro's Tim Marrion, making his debut after Alex Tunnadine had withdrawn at the eleventh hour due to illness, did his bit but it was the experience of Penberthy that shone through to steer Cornwall home. He hit a 6 and 9 fours off 113 balls. With the scores level he was caught behind for 94, the third highest score by a Cornish player in the competition's 23 year history. Mark George came in to scramble the winning run with an over to spare. Pineo took 4-38 from 10 overs.

The Dorset innings had got off to a good start with Glyn Treagus and Neil Thurgood adding 72 in 16 overs. Sharp got the breakthrough to have Thurgood stumped for 43. Treagus followed lbw to Mark George at 85-2 as the Cornish slow bowlers took a grip. In a fine spell George took 2-20 from his 10 overs while Sharp was equally as accurate taking 1-23 from his quota. The Dorset innings relied on Reg Keates, who ended on 62 not out with a 6 and 3 fours. He got good support from Peter Deakin (28) as the pair added 61 for the fifth wicket to ensure a total of over 200. Chris Hunkin, bowling at the end of the innings, took 2-39 and Penberthy 1-33 from 10 overs with Thomas also claiming a wicket.
