Sunday 5th May at St Just Cornwall 131-6 beat Dorset 129 by 4 wickets Cornwall got their MCCA Trophy campaign off to a winning start with a four wicket win over Dorset with a ball short of 10 overs to spare. However it was anything but a comfortable win and when 18 year old Alex Smeeth, making his debut, strode out to join Gary Thomas at 90 for 6 with a further 40 required the game was in the balance. Smeeth held his nerve striking three boundaries in his valuable 18 not out off 54 balls. At the other end Gary Thomas showed all his experience. Playing on his home patch he arrived at the crease in the third over at 11-2. Matt Robins, fresh from his previous day's 138, stroked a couple of fours before being bowled by Martin Ford and Werrington clubmate Adam Hodgson fell first ball to Matt Metcalfe. Thomas and Carl Gazzard took the total to 43 before Gazzard departed for 19. Dorset skipper Tom Hicks then bowled what might have been a match winning spell. The tall spinner, getting assistance from the pitch, sent down 10 overs taking 2 for 14. They were the important wickets of Chris Hunkin , who pushed forward to silly mid off, and Tom Sharp caught around the corner sweeping. Martin Jenkin followed lbw for 10 to Simon Watkins. However Thomas found a partner in young Smeeth as the Duchy inched home in the gathering gloom. Earlier the day had got of to an unexpected start. The visitors had quick bowler 'Ziggy' Arshad injuring a finger in the warm up which resulted in a trip to the x-ray Department of West Cornwall Hospital. Watkins came into the side at the eleventh hour. Cornwall had their own dramas with Kelvin Snell dropping out on Saturday evening, due to a back injury. Local St Just stalwart, Graham Trenwith, at the age of 46, was drafted into the team some 14 years after making the last of his 11 County Championship appearances. Opening the bowling he sent down a tidy 7 overs for 25 runs. At the other end Rob Harrison made two early breakthroughs getting rid of Glyn Treagus and Darren Cowley with only 6 on the board. Tom Webley (38) and Steve Selwood (52) looked to be building a strong platform until Webley was bowled by Jenkin. Sharp then held a sharp return catch from Selwood, which saw him come off the field for the rest of the innings for attention. Jenkin bowled Ben Lawes for 3 then two wickets in an over for Michael Munday set the visitors back on their heels. The Somerset leg spinner went on to produce a fine spell to wrap up the innings, taking 4 for 18 from 7 overs. Dorset last eight wickets fell for 37. Harrison took 2 for 27 at the top of the innings and Jenkin, in only his second County game, the excellent figures of 2 for 22 from 10 overs. Skipper Tom Sharp was pleased with his sides efforts. He said "It was important that we got off to a good start after the defeat on Day 1 last year". He added "The overall team contribution was pleasing and Gary Thomas played an excellent innings with Alex Smeeth batting with great composure ". "Michael Munday's fine spell proved pivotal as it prevented their innings from getting away". Cornwall move on to Newbury next Sunday to play Berkshire before hosting Wales M C at Falmouth the following week with a possible Group decider at Instow against Devon in early June.
