Cornwall 243-7 Devon 204

Cornwall (2pts) beat Devon by 39 runs

Despite losing David Roberts to the first ball of the match and Tom Sharp, who retired for 13 after aggravating a side injury and played no further part in the game, 43 from Dan Davis and half centuries from Gary Thomas and Chris Hunkin saw Cornwall to a respectable total. Sam Hockin then struck three times to reduce the visitors to 1-2 and 20-3. Rob Holman made 55 but the task always looked a tall order with 136 needed off the last 20 overs.

Sunday 25 April at Devizes C C

Wiltshire v Cornwall

Wiltshire 276 Cornwall 242-9      ScoreCard

Wiltshire (2pts) beat Cornwall by 6 runs (D/L method)

The game, which Cornwall somehow lost from a seemingly strong position, will go down in history as the first involving the county to be determined by the Duckworth Lewis method. The Wiltshire innings was completed in good weather as they were bowled out for 276 in the last of their 50 overs. Rain fell during lunch but with the rules allowing an hour to be added to the playing time no adjustments had to be made to the target. With Cornwall 69 for 1, after 9.3 overs, a light shower saw the players leave the field but by the time of the resumption it was deemed nine overs had been lost, thus Duckworth Lewis came into play. Cornwall's target was 248 off 41 overs. With David Roberts hitting a superb century, his 113 came off 105 balls with two sixes and 14 fours, Cornwall were well set at 210-4 needing a run a ball. After adding 95 with Chris Hunkin for the fifth wicket Roberts was lbw to Ryan Watkins. From thereon the innings fell away in panicky fashion. It came down to nine needed off the last over, but only three were scored. In the Wiltshire innings a solid display saw opener Mitchell Stokes top score with 52 with James Hayward, Ryan Watkins and James Hibberd all passing 40. Justin Stephens, on his return to county cricket after three years, took three for 48. Cornwall had brought in Kelvin Snell as Nottinghamshire had recalled Charlie Shreck and Rob Harrison was unavailable due to the flight problems caused by the volcanic dust.

Sunday 10th May at Truro

Cornwall v Herefordshire

Cornwall 311-6, Herefordshire 162

Scorecard

Cornwall got their MCCA knock out cup season back on track with a convincing 149 run win over Herefordshire in the Truro sunshine on Sunday. The group appears wide open with only Wiltshire unbeaten to date. Cornwall travel to Newbury this Sunday where Berkshire, Minor County champions last year and beaten cup finalists, must win having lost both opening group games. The win at Boscawen Park was based on an impressive batting performance led by a Keith Parsons century in the imposing 50 over total of 311 for 6, equalling Cornwall's second highest ever total in the competition. The visitors made a lively start but Cornwall's bowlers took control and with Ben Smeeth taking five wickets at the end victory was completed with eight overs to spare. Cornwall were put in but lost David Roberts early for 9 when he was beaten by Luke Sellers from the city end. Parsons joined Gary Thomas and the pair put the Duchy in the driving seat adding 147 in 31 overs. Thomas was back to his county best striking eight boundaries before visiting skipper Chris Boroughs bowled him for 60. Parsons was well caught by Sellers at long on just after reaching his maiden century for the county. His 106 came off 115 balls with 13 boundaries. Tom Sharp followed shortly after, making 23 before being trapped lbw by Freddie Eburah. With seven overs to go it was time for some fireworks and Chris Hunkin and Rob Harrison were only too happy to oblige. Hunkin's 44 came off only 23 balls while Harrison hit a quickfire 28 before both fell near the end to the cause. 97 were blasted off the last seven overs. Herefordshire's innings got off to a bright start with Dan Bassett making 24 before top edging a hook off Alex Smeeth to his brother who held the catch at mid on. Ben Stebbings followed, caught at slip by Keith Parsons, to give Smeeth a second wicket at 46 for 2. Dan Davis and Tom Sharp bowled tidily as the visitors got behind the rate. Huw Jones lobbed to Davis for a return catch before Henry Langford was well held at mid wicket by Parsons after making 41. Sharp picked up a superb caught and bowled with a one handed reaction catch to get rid of David Exall. The end came in a hurry as the last six wickets fell for 17 runs. Ben Smeeth, who only came into the side as a late replacement for Mark George, was the benefactor. His five for 22 from nine overs has only been bettered by a Cornish bowler in the competition by Paul Berryman's five for 19 against Devon in 1995. Following the trip to Newbury the group finale will be at St Austell against Wiltshire at the end of the month.

Sunday 26th April at Exmouth

Devon v Cornwall

Devon 242-8, Cornwall 198

Scorecard

Cornwall lost their opening MCCA Trophy game at Exmouth .. The 44 run defeat does not end Cornwall’s hopes of progress in the competition, with the top two going forward to the quarter finals, but the pressure is now on with little room for error in the remaining three group games. Devon, having been put in, lost Lewis Gregory to the first ball of the match from Alex Smeeth. Bobby Dawson made a determined half century and with Rob Holman making 40 the home team laid a sound foundation. The Cornwall bowlers had stuck to their task but the game got away thanks to an explosive innings from Neil Hancock. He hit three big sixes and six fours in a vital 78 not out. The last ten overs saw 86 runs added to leave the hosts well placed at 242 for 8 off 50 overs. Dan Davis took three for 36 and Tom Sharp two for 33. Alex Smeeth conceded 27 off his last two overs to end with one for 66 and Mark George also suffered at the hands of Hancock taking one for 52 from nine overs. Matthew Rowe left the field early in the Devon innings with migraine so Gary Thomas was promoted to open with St Just team mate David Roberts. The pair added 23 in six overs before Thomas was lbw to Trevor Anning for 9. Ian Bishop, ahead of a disciplinary ban which starts this weekend, and Anning kept things tight before the issue was virtually decided in two successive Bishop overs. He had Roberts held at slip by David Court for 17. Then in his eighth over Matt Robins was dismissed in the same fashion for 15 then next ball Sharp was caught behind, much to the Devon team’s delight. Chris Hunkin and Keith Parsons recovered things and at 106 for 4, with 19 overs remaining, there was still an outside hope of a dramatic fightback. Bobby Dawson got the breakthrough to have Hunkin spectacularly caught at point by young Gregory for 23. Parsons went on to make 63 off 111 balls but the writing was on the wall. Dan Davis struck a lively 30 off 23 balls, with four boundaries, but the innings ended with three overs to go when James Hudson wrapped up the tail having Mark George stumped.
