Possibly the earliest ever start to a Cornish Cricket season (April 3rd) saw just under 2 hours play, and only 28 overs possible, before rain set in to end proceedings at Truro in Cornwall's game against Somerset CCC. In their first competitive match of the season Somerset were at full strength and included internationals Andrew Caddick, Richard Johnson and Ian Blackwell.

The game, in aid of Keith Parsons benefit, had a delayed start due to some morning rain. Following an early lunch play got underway 2 ¼ hours late at 1.45pm with the overs reduced to 35 per side. The experienced Peter Bowler took strike with new recruit, left handed John Francis who has joined from Hampshire, as his partner.

With Justin Stephens bowling four successive maidens from the river end and Chris Hunkin supporting well Somerset got off to a slow start as only 15 came off the first 10 overs. Francis, after striking three boundaries off Lee Caddy, fell to the new Truro player in his next over when Hunkin held onto a good catch at mid on with the score on 38 in the 15th over.

Cornishman Neil Edwards joined Bowler and the pair kept the board ticking over adding 45 before Bowler was bowled by Ryan Driver for 25 at 83-2. West Indies bound, England player, Ian Blackwell was denied an opportunity to start his innings as the rain set in for the afternoon.

Cornwall used seven bowlers with, in addition to Stephens, tight spells being produced by Chris Hunkin, Rob Harrison and Jim Shorten.
