Falmouth’s venture in this season’s Cockspur Cup ended on Sunday1 June when they went out to Plymouth at Trescobeas by five wickets. The tie was switched to Falmouth on the eve of the game because of the recent heavy rains in Devon. Falmouth were below par with the bat and were bowled out for only 121. Duncan Ayres (30) and George Popperwell (30no) were the chief run scorers. Antony Angove was an absentee as he was representing Cornwall against Devon at St Just. Andy Horrill took three for 25. Callum Whittaker top scored with 37 as Plymouth went on to win by five wickets with two overs to spare. Falmouth skipper Ayres completed a good game taking three for 22. Falmouth 121 (D Ayres 30, G Popperwell 30no; A Horrill 3-25), Plymouth 122-5 (C Whittaker 37, K Willcocks 30, C Barr 28; D Ayres 3-22). Plymouth beat Falmouth by five wickets.
The Cockspur Cup semi-finalists of the last two years, St Just, have gone out of the competition in their opening game. They lost at Falmouth on Sun 25 May by 33 runs in the rearranged game. Falmouth made 128 for 8 in a game reduced to 35 overs. Skipper Duncan Ayres added a valuable 25 not out at the end after Gordon Whorlow had made 24. Mark George took three for 23. St Just got into immediate trouble losing David Roberts and Gary Thomas for ducks. Neil Curnow made 20 and Mark George 23 and but the end came at 95 all out in the 30th over. Dave Neville wrapped up the tail taking three for 4 with Ayres and Justin Inglis taking two apiece. Falmouth, the only remaining Cornish side, are away to Plymouth in the next round which is scheduled for next Sunday.
