Clive Rosevear Insurance Hawkey Cup Finals Day at St Austell CC The sun shone, and a good day was had by all, as St Austell won the Clive Rosevear Insurance Hawkey Cup in the new finals day format at Wheal Eliza on Sunday. Thankfully a fine, warm day allowed both semi-finals and final to go ahead as scheduled in a feast of cricket involving the top four sides in the east of the county. It cumulated, as dusk descended, in St Austell lifting the trophy for the first time since 1997 when they defeated Grampound Road by seven wickets with ten balls to spare. The ‘Road’ made 127 for 8 in their 20 overs after openers Tom Hughes (21) and Jake Preston (40) had put on 42 in five overs to get them off to a flying start. Chris Roberts made 23 not out at the end of the innings after Liam Watson took four middle order wickets at a cost of 22 runs. It included the wicket of Dave Wilton who was brilliantly held in a running catch in the deep by Matt Ellison. For St Austell, after the early loss of Dan Jarman caught in the gully for 9, Brayden Hill gave the innings some momentum hitting two sixes in his 27 off 14 balls. He holed out to mid off and Matt Rowe was caught behind for 5 at 63-3. However Matt Ellison (49no) and Taylor Williams (24 not out) put on an unbroken 65 to win the game, timing their run chase to perfection after 36 had been needed off the last six overs. Fittingly, in the 50th anniversary year of the competition, Ross Hawkey the grandson of Croydon Hawkey who initiated the competition in 1958, presented the trophy to winning skipper Sean Hooper. Competition sponsor Clive Rosevear presented the man of the match award to Matt Ellison. In the morning semi-final Tom Hughes made 81 to steer Grampound Road to 161 for 8 against Newquay with Godfrey Furse taking three for 44. In reply Newquay lost five wickets cheaply before Furse (37) and Neil Ivamy (29) helped to get the total to 125 all out. In the second semi-final Werrington were bowled out for 115 by St Austell with Steve Raven taking three for 34. Alex Smeeth made 38. St Austell lost their first four wickets for 31 before Taylor Williams (41no) and Sean Hooper (46no) added a match winning unbroken stand of 85 with the winning runs coming with two overs to spare. Played out in front of a good crowd, and thanks to some hard work by the St Austell club, the day proved a success. Prior to the final Grampound Road won an Under 11 Kwik Cricket tournament between the four competing clubs.

Round 2 Summary

The Clive Rosevear Insurance Hawkey Cup holders Werrington are in danger of being eliminated from this year's competition. In the second round of group games last week they lost by just one run at Callington. Jon Parsons made 23 in Callington's 93-8. Ben Smeeth took four for 16. Werrington were then restricted to 92-7. Ben Smeeth was run out for 48 on attempting a third run off the last ball to tie the game. Jim Shorten and James Boundy took two wickets apiece. Callington will qualify for the semi-finals if they win their final Group A game at Bude next Wednesday (4th June). The winners of the Grampound Road and Roche game next week will determine the Group B qualifiers. Grampound Road beat Gorran last week by 107 runs after making the big total of 204-7. Mpho Sekhoto made 76 and Matthew South 41. In Group C St Austell, with wins over Fowey and Lanhydrock, will qualify if they beat Menheniot at home next week. Group D has been affected by a number of concessions. Newquay are favourites to qualify as they need to beat St Neot in their final game. Last week they won at Wadebridge by nine wickets. The home team were held to 101-9 with Richard Spall taking four for 24. Barry Purchase (41) and Joe Crane (36no) secured the win, which was marred by an ankle injury sustained by skipper Rob Harrison.
