(4Cornish entries) Group 10 Draw Wales & West (Cornish teams in bold) Round 1 Sunday 3 May There was mixed success for Cornish teams in the National Club Championship on Sunday. Werrington won at Plympton by 20 runs to set up a second round tie at home to St Just, who had a first round bye. Elsewhere Falmouth lost at home to Bovey Tracey while Callington were also defeated by Devon opponents Cornwood. Young Paul Smith was Werrington’s star at Plympton hitting 7 sixes and 5 fours in his unbeaten 92. Werrington reached 169 for 6 in their 45 overs. This after the Cornish side had lost their first five wickets for 39. Ben Smeeth then took four for 34 to see his side home by 20 runs.. Opener Ben Ayres held the Bovey Tracey innings together at Falmouth making 78 as they totalled 187 for 9 in their 45 overs. Greg Stephens took four for 38 from nine overs and Dave Neville two for 28 with a wicket apiece for Duncan Ayres, Justin Inglis and Jon Udy. Falmouth lost Stefan Churcher and Matt Wiley with only 15 on the board. Steve Williams made 19 before being run out at 35 for 3. Inglis made 51 to keep the home team in the game but wickets continued to tumble with the end coming at 153, with six overs and two balls remaining. Udy was undefeated on 24. Callington’s batting failed at home to Cornwood. At one stage they were 35 for 7 before Jamie Hatch added some respectability with 17 batting at number nine. Cornwood lost four wickets in reaching the target of 73. (1) Falmouth v Bovey Tracey card Bovey Tracey 187-9 (B Ayres 78, L Ames 21; G Stephens 4-38, D Neville 2-28), Falmouth 153 (J Inglis 51, J Udy 24no; A Fairbairn 3-28, C Bradley 2-12, R Bougard 2-18). Bovey Tracey beat Falmouth by 34 runs.
(2) Callington v Cornwood card Callington 72 (J Hatch 17; A Bees 4-8, S Smith 2-5), Cornwood 74-4 (D Boase 26). Cornwood beat Callington by six wickets.
(3) Plympton v Werrington card Werrington 169-6 (P Smith 92no; C Donahue 2-20, K Donahue 2-33), Plympton 149-9 (K Donahue 4-34; B Smeeth 4-34, M Robins 2-16, S Hockin 2-39). Werrington beat Plympton by 20 runs.
