Premier League Review - Sat 28th
April Round 1
By Michael Weeks
It was a fair bet that, following
the controversary and debate of the winter about the formation of an
ECB Premier League in the County, when it came to bat and ball time
there would be another twist in the tale. And so it came to pass that
on the opening day of the season only one of the five games was able
to be played to a natural conclusion with one being abandoned and not
a ball bowled at the other three venues,.
One of the wettest winters on record,
followed by a mainly damp, cold early spring was further exacipated
by a very unsettled week leading up to the start of the season. As a
result the game at Troon against Falmouth was called off due
to the state of the ground on Saturday morning as was the St. Buryan
v Helston fixture. At Truro, where Grampound Road
were visitors, there was an afternoon of pitch inspections before play
was called off at 4.30pm. In the new world of non rearrangement teams
took 6 points each.
At Camborne a lunchtime shower
not only dampened Trevithick Day celebrations in the town but put back
the game at Roskear against St. Just. Play got underway an hour
late at 2.30pm. St Just made 123 all out with Kevin Hall 37 and Neil
Curnow 33. Simon Johnson took 5-29 off 11 overs with Paul Berryman and
Andy Gill taking 2 apiece. The game was interestingly poised at 71-3
with around 11 overs to go when a heavy shower ended proceedings just
past half seven. Newcomer Neil Edwards was 27 not out and Peter Davey
21 no. Graham Trenwith took 2-24 off 11 overs and kiwi professional
Cleighten Cornelious's figures were 9-6-13-0. Camborne 11 pts, St Just
8 pts
There was better luck at Callington
where 96 overs were possible against Penzance. The home team
declared on 210-4 off 45 overs. New professional Junie Mitchum hit 81no
and Bill Prosser 67no in a profitable stand. In reply skipper Tim Lord
53no and Scott May 54 saw Penzance comfortably to a draw at 153-2 off
51overs. Callington 12 pts Penzance 6 pts.
