St Buryan withdraw from the
Premier League Jolly's Drinks Cornwall Cricket
League Press Release Thursday
27th November St Buryan Cricket Club have
withdrawn from the Jolly's Drinks ECB Cornwall Premier League. Following
several meetings the club committee were "extremely saddened" to inform the League
that "We will be unable to raise a side in 2004 due to work commitments and some
cricketers wishing not to play Premier Cricket. We do not wish to pursue the avenue
of overseas players. The second XI only just managed to escape relegation from
Division 5 West and the gap is too great to expect these players to slip into
Premier boots. It is our intention to build the side with youth and hopefully
progress once more through the Leagues". Having won two successive promotions
St Buryan entered the old County Division 1 in 1995. After finishing 9th and 5th
they have always managed a position in the top two over the past seven seasons.
They were County Champions in 1999 and 2000 and have been runners up in each of
the first three years of the ECB Cornwall Premier League. They finished 31 points
behind champions Newquay this season. The League have yet to decide what
actions to take but the compilation of fixtures for 2004 has now been put on hold
and their publication will be delayed. The Premier League clubs have recently
indicated to the League, by a majority of 6 to 4, to revert to playing each other
on three occasions next year rather than the present format of playing an extra
four random games to make up a 22 match season..
