Under 15's Reports by Manger John Eddy Sunday, May 19th.U15 v Millfield School at Millfield Millfield 94: R Lewis 3-12 Cornwall 92: T Edwards 25 The Under 15’s travelled to Millfield to take on a very strong school side containing a number of West and South regional players. They bowled and fielded exceptionally well to restrict the home side to 94 all out. All six bowlers used took at least one wicket, with Richard Lewis (3 for 12) being the pick of the bunch. Eight good catches were taken by eight different boys. When Cornwall batted, a couple of unfortunate dismissals meant that we were always on the back foot, so to speak, but a very disciplined innings of 25 from Tom Edwards kept us in the hunt for a time. However, when Tom was out, there followed a middle order collapse (not for the first time!) and the innings was in some disarray at 63 for 9. A heroic last wicket partnership between Graham Griffiths and Neil Rowse, who both batted with determination, application and a skill which belied their lowly positions in the order, almost saw us through to a famous victory before Graham was adjudged LBW – very harshly, it seemed to the Cornwall supporters – an agonising three runs short of our target. Our disappointment was compounded by the fact that, during the Cornwall innings, there had been three calls of “one short”! In addition, spectators who were square with the wicket reckoned that one of the Millfield bowlers should have been no-balled at least eight times for over-stepping. Will this team never have any luck? Sunday, June 2nd – at King’s College, Taunton. Cornwall 98 all out (42 overs) Hampshire 100 for 3 (28 overs). After a promising opening stand of 34 between Ashley Hockin (21) and Craig Thomas (10), the middle order failed and it was left to the likes of Liam Devine, Gyles Reynolds and Graham Griffiths to restore a little respectability to the final total. Although we did manage to capture a couple of early wickets, a very mature innings of 53 not out from West player Eddie Bruce ensured that Hampshire were able to cruise fairly comfortably to a seven wicket win.
Monday, June 3rd – at Perranporth C.C. Cornwall 120 for 6 (50 overs) Lancashire 121 for 2 (36 overs) At first glance, a pretty ordinary, bread and butter victory for a very strong Lancashire side, but the bare details give no indication of the high drama surrounding the Cornwall innings. Just take a look at the fall of wickets: 1-0, 2-5, 3-5, 4-10, 5-17, 6-19 (after 16 overs!). Then take a look at the final score above. Yes indeed! The seventh wicket partnership really did produce 101 runs – a county record for this wicket at any age group. Congratulations to Liam Devine (69 not out in only his second county match) and Ryan Davies (28 not out), both of whom batted with great grit and determination, and with increasing confidence and fluency, against one of the best all-round Under 15 attacks in the country. Both boys attend Cape Cornwall School, and I’m sure all staff and students will be immensely proud of them. Obviously, the Cornwall total caused the visitors few problems, but after the heroic achievements of earlier in the day, it didn’t really seem to matter. Sunday, June 30th. at Canford School Dorset 211-7 Cornwall 144 The Under 15’s made the long trek to Canford School (a round trip of 400+ miles for the Penzance contingent) to meet Dorset in a championship game. Initially, thanks largely to some tidy bowling from Richard Lewis, Tom Edwards, Graham Griffiths and Neil Rowse and a generally impressive fielding performance, the Cornish boys did very well to restrict their strong opponents to 101 for 5 after 35 overs. However, they then had to suffer a violent onslaught from the sixth wicket pair who carved, slogged and snicked their way to a partnership of 85, made in just 11 overs. Dorset eventually finished on 211 for 7, a stiff target rendered all the more difficult by the fact that Cornwall, in reply, soon found themselves at 18 for 3. But, as has been the case in every match this season, the middle and lower order offered stern resistance, and useful contributions from Gyles Reynolds (33), Tom Edwards (22), Ryan Davies (18), Neil Rowse (14) and Liam Devine (12) enabled us to finish on a respectable – if not particularly threatening – 144 all out, with the last wicket falling to the final ball of the game.
