Under 16's

CORNWALL U16 v ISLE OF WIGHT at Mount Ambrose CC on Friday, August 1st.

The Under 16’s ended their season on a high note with an emphatic win over a lively Isle of Wight outfit who had defeated Devon the previous day. After a solid, if rather sedate, opening partnership of 44 in 18 overs (to which Ashley Hockin contributed 25), Tom Edwards, who has been in quite superb form all year, absolutely excelled himself with a blistering innings of 96 which contained 8 massive sixes and 6 fours. He was ably supported by skipper Peter Butler (27) and together they added 115 in just 16 overs to help Cornwall to a final total of 195 for 5 from their 40 overs.

Despite the fact that the Cornwall boys between them managed 29 wides and 4 no balls, their opponents were always behind the clock and finished the match 30 runs short on 165 for 8. Five bowlers captured one wicket apiece and there were three run outs (one the result of a particularly smart bit of work from Steve Raven). A very pleasant way in which to end the year – and John Eddy’s managerial career which has embraced nineteen seasons without a break.

CORNWALL 195 – 8 (T Edwards 96, P Butler 27, A Hockin 25)

ISLE OF WIGHT 165 – 8 (G Reynolds 1-15, P Butler 1-18, S Raven 1-28, G Griffiths 1-34, A Hockin 1-38)

UNDER 16’s v OXFORDSHIRE (Falmouth CC – July 17th)

A disappointing seven wicket defeat against an Oxfordshire side which, to be honest, was not really very good. Batting first, the Cornwall boys were never able to recover from a horrendous start (6 for 3 after 5 overs) despite an excellent 71 from the in-form Tom Edwards, who was last out in the 46th over. Gyles Reynold (15) and Extras (16) were the only other double figures contributors. In reply, the Oxfordshire batsmen made hard work of reaching what should have been a comparatively easy target, needing 44 overs and losing 3 wickets in the process. Although Ashley Hockin took all three wickets to fall, there were also some tight spells from Neil Rowse (29 from 10 overs), Richard Lewis (19 from 9) and Gyles Reynolds (7 from 6). Although this was a real setback, the championship group remains wide open, and victories against Berkshire and the Isle of Wight in the next two weeks would still give us a good chance of making the final stages.

CORNWALL 124 (T Edwards 71, G Reynolds 15) OXFORDSHIRE 127 – 3 (A Hockin 3-36)

CORNWALL UNDER 16’s v WALES Werrington CC on Tuesday, July 8th.

After their excellent win against Devon, the Under 16’s came down to earth with something of a bump when they were heavily defeated – by 143 runs - by a very strong Welsh side. Wales, batting first recovered from 56 for 3 to a final total of 244 for 3 after 50 overs thanks to an unbroken stand of 188 between B Wright (117 n.o.) and L Cronk (64 n.o.). Wright’s 117* was the highest ever individual score against a Cornwall U16 side, and the partnership was the highest for any wicket against the U 16’s (and also the best for the fourth wicket against Cornwall for any age group). And our boys didn’t really bowl badly at all, particularly Gyles Reynolds, who emerged with the extremely respectable figures of 2 for 34 from his 10 overs. Although, in reply, five out of Cornwall’s top six batsmen (Brett Andrew, Peter Butler, Tom Edwards, Jon Bustin and Gyles Reynolds) made it into double figures, none unfortunately was able to ‘go on’ and we eventually succumbed for a rather modest 101. Still, this was only a friendly, and we expect to fare much better in our next Championship match – against Oxfordshire at Falmouth on Thursday, July 17th. Watch this space!

WALES 244-3 (G Reynolds 2-34, R Lewis 1-59)

CORNWALL 101 (T Edwards 18, P Butler 16, G Reynolds 13, B Andrew 11, J Bustin 10)

After experiencing a pretty traumatic season in 2002 with seven defeats from seven games, the Cornwall boys got their 2003 County Championship campaign off to a flying start with a highly exciting 7-run defeat of Devon. The Cornwall innings of 231 for 7 (from 50 overs) was built around a disciplined 71 from opener Brett Andrew, who shared partnerships of 85 with Ashley Hockin (53), 47 with Peter Butler (26) and 72 with Tom Edwards (34). Jon Bustin also contributed a very rapid 16 at the end.

The Devon innings, in the early stages, followed a very similar pattern to Cornwall’s and after 25 overs the openers were still going strong with the score on 106. However, Neil Rowse made the initial breakthrough and thereafter wickets fell at regular intervals, but with Devon still always being ‘in the hunt’. In a generally highly impressive Cornwall fielding display, two catches in particular will live long in the memory of everyone present. One superb effort by Jon Bustin looked like being the ‘champagne moment’ until it in turn was eclipsed by a piece of pure magic from Graham Griffiths. All in all, a great day!

Cornwall 231-7 (B Andrew 71, A Hockin 53, T Edwards 34, P Butler 26, J Bustin 16)

Devon 224-8 (N Rowse 2-40, S Raven 2-43, R Lewis 2-52, A Hockin 1-36)

Oxford won by 1 wicket off the last ball of the match, after 5 runs were awarded at the end of the penultimate over for a ball striking the wicketkeeper's discarded helmet. During the Oxford innings Liam Watson for Cornwall had the distinction of taking 3 outfield catches to add to the 5 he had already taken during the week.

Cornwall were Festival Winners, with Oxford 2nd and London 3rd.

Cornwall U14 v Millfield School at Millfield Sunday 11th May.

Cornwall 149 Angove 29 Smeeth 22

Millfield 25-7 Pearce 3-7 Davis 2-9

Match abandoned.

In conditions helpful to swing and seam, the Cornwall total of 149 appeared to be about 20 runs short of a comfortable score. But two wickets in the opening over from Dan Davis and three more quickly from Alex Pearce put Millfield on the slide. Aided by some sharp catching and a direct hit run out, Millfield were sinking fast when the rains came at 25 for 7. Frustrating, but still a good start to the season for the Cornwall boys.

Cornwall v Wiltshire played at King's Taunton Sunday 6th July 2003 ECB Championship 97 over game

Wiltshire won the toss and decided to put Cornwall into bat on what looked like a reasonable batting track. This proved to be the case as the formidable Mat Robins raced to 50 from the first 59 scored. He hit 15 x 4 in a score of 82 from 72 balls and looked at one stage to be on course for another big score. There was support from Steven kevern (Redruth) who made 25 and then it was new names making a mark with the bat Sam Hockin (Bude) 29, Joe Dale (Truro) 19 and Joe Parkinson (St.Austell) 12, to give us a total of 218 all out in the 50th over. Ben Stevens (Redruth) rattled into them from the start and took three early wickets and with a run out Wiltshire were 20 for 4. At 72 for 8 the game was won or so we thought but it took another 22 overs to take the remaining two wickets after it looked like they may survive with only four overs to go.They madse 145 all out. A good team effort but we will have to raise our game when we take on Dorset again this time in the Championship.

Cornwall v Dorset played at King's Taunton Sunday 29th June 2003 ECB CUP 40 overs

After receiving information that Dorset would be one of the weaker teams we rested the captain Mark Jenkin (Redruth) a decision he was probably grateful of. On a belting wicket Chris Jones the Dorset opener (under 12) put all the bowlers to the sword in an exhibition of hitting, especially anything that strayed onto the leg stump and their was a lot of that. He scored an superb 176 (23x4 and 3x6) although dropped on 20 and 41, he was supported by Tom Blackburn 40 and Tom Angel 71. But after these three the rest of the side managed 30 between them, Dorset being all out for 349 off the last ball of the 40th over. 325 for 4 to 349 all out. With the asking rate of nearly 9 an over we decided to get some of our batters a score rather than risk being being bowled out for nothing having a thrash. In response Matt Robins (Lucket) compiled an immaculate chanceless century of 125 deliveries incuding 14 x 4's. He was also well supported by Nick Matthews (St.Austell) who made his highest CSCA score of 42 as Cornwall managed 200 for 6 from 40 overs.

Cornwall v Somerset played at TRURO C C Sunday 22nd June 2003 ECB CUP 40 overs

Buoyed by their win against devon the previous week Cornwall U-13's went into this fixture with confidence. After a good performance in the field we were happy bowl Somerset out in the 38th over for 184. On this occasion it was the seam bowlers that did all the damage with Sam Hockin (Bude) 3wkts, Ben Stevens (Redruth) and Jon Hancock (Newquay) 2wkts each and 1 for Alex Taylor playing on his home ground. Unfortunately at tea there was a cloudburst and no further play was possible denying what could have been our first win against Somerset.

Sunday 15th June Result of U-13 ECB 40 Over Cup game v Devon played at Bovey Tracey

Devon 135 for 9 from 40 overs (Ben Stevens 2-19,Sam Hockin 3-19)

Cornwall 136 for 6 in 35 overs (Matt Robins 18, Jack Brighouse 16, Steven Kevern 29, Mark Jenkin 16, Nick Matthews 12 not out)

A super performance from Cornwall U-13 in the field where they hardly put a foot wrong, the bowling was tight (apart from 8 overs in the middle of the innings) and the fielding and field placing excellent. In responce to a modest total Cornwall raced to 72 from the first 12 overs with some exciting and powerful stroke play from all the batsmen. With the game already won by the top order Nick Matthews and Joe Parkinson brought Cornwall home with 5 overs to spare. This was the first time that this side has beaten Devon but know they have a tougher game next week against Somerset at Truro.

8th June Cornwall Under 13's gained an impressive 9 wicket win over Millfield School at Perranporth.

Millfield 119-7: D Williams 37, N Gibbons 32.

Cornwall 120-1: Jack Brighouse 39no, Matt Robbins 36, Steve Kevern 29no.

Cornwall beat Millfield by 9 wkts.
