CSCA Under 13 Tour to South Africa February 2002

Itinerary

Results

The Cornwall Schools' Cricket Association's Under 13 team have not enjoyed the best of weather at the start of their two week tour to South Africa. In Johannesburg a day night match against St Stithians was reduced to a 30 over game on an artificial pitch due to a waterlogged pitch. The game against King Edward's Preparatory School was played on a very wet outfield in almost continuous drizzle and the two innings match was drawn. Conditions improved for the return match against St Stithians where good knocks from Alex Smeeth and Scott Jenkin enabled the Cornish boys to get the best of a drawn game. The party have now moved onto Cape Town for the second leg of the tour.

At the Rygersdal Sports Club against Wynberg Junior Boys School, in hot conditions in Cornwall lost by 31 runs. A good bowling and fielding effort restricted the home team to 69-9 but Cornwall disappointed with the bat with too many batsmen on the backfoot.

The following day against the South African College School the highlight was a hat trick for Eddie Sharpe (Gorran CC) as the home team were contained to 96-8 in a 35 over game. With Ryan Edwards making 19 and Joel Westlake 13 Cornwall at one stage looked in with a chance but after they were dismissed no-one else got into double figures as the game ended in a 9 run defeat.

In the game at Rondebosch.again played in very hot wearher, Cornwall made 100 thanks mainly to Scott Jenkin's 33. The home team were restricted to 93-8 with only 6 runs coming off the last 5 ovrers. Matthew Rowe and Ed Sharpe took two wickets apiece.

Against Langa / Tiger bay the Cornweall team had the memorable experience of playing in a township. Adam Nanvce and Ed Sharpe took two wickets apiece to bowl the home team out for 84 in 30 ivers. Nick King with 22 and Chris Roberts with 18 led the team to an 8 wicket win.

The tour ended on a high with an 8 wicket win against Wynberg played in very, very hot conditions of 42º plus. Alex Smeeth had an excellent match taking 5-18 off 12 overs and then made 28 not out sharing a match winning partnership with Chris Roberts who also made 28 not out..
