Grampound Road stages Floodlit
Game 
On
Sunday 28th July the colour and glitz of floodlit cricket came to Cornwall when
a sizeable crowd enjoyed an entertaining evening at Grampound Road . The
home club, aided by overseas players Hayden Spierling (St Just) and Dan McLoughlan
(St Austell) took on a Cornwall XI, all of whom have played championship cricket.
With thirteen floodlight pylons, supplied by Hewden Hire, 'Aussie' Marquees in
place, stands, music, licensed bar, barbecue's firing on all cylinders and coloured
clothing a taste of the new cricket craze sweeping the country came to balmy,
late summer Cornish evening. Cornwall batted first and made
239 for 8 in their 35 overs. Ben Price made an unbeaten 83 that included 2 sixes
and 11 fours off 84 balls. David Roberts opened with 36 and there were good knocks
from Rob Harrison who made 32, Tom Sharp 28 and Nick George 19. Gary Thomas was
the first wicket to fall, run out for 10. Ben Rowse took 3 for 24, Chris Hunkin
2 for 24 and McLoughlan, who bowled very quickly, 1 for 29. The
home team were bowled out for 217 with 4 overs remaining to lose by 22 runs. After
losing Dave Wilton and Peter Davey cheaply Chris Hunkin made 20 before Kris Harris
hit 51 with 2 sixes and 8 fours of 42 balls. Chris Roberts then struck an excellent
61 with a 6 and 7 fours to keep the game alive. McLoughlan and Martin Pearce both
made 13 but the task proved just too much for the tail as the game went on past
10.30pm on a memorable evening. Mark George took 3-23, Nick George 3 for 36 and
