Camborne CC continue to recruit

"Off spinner Darren Shorland has joined the Roskear outfit for the 2004 season, writes Paul Berryman, after seeing all of the positive press in the local media", Camborne's Director of Cricket Paul Berryman announced. "I am thrilled that because of the players we have been recruiting, this has encouraged others to follow suit. Darren played for Troon last year in the premier league for the first part of the season and starred in some early positive results for the Treslothan side. He has opted to join a Club which he sees is 'going places'."

"I have decided to join Camborne as they are putting together a really strong squad, and most importantly, they are being run by younger people who are in touch with the modern game." Shorland cited as one of his main reasons for joining the Club. "Darren has bags of experience after representing Cornwall at all age groups from under 11's through to Colts". He also went on to represent Cornwall at Minor Counties level, gaining three caps in 1989.

"I remember playing alongside him for his debut at Cheshire. He has also represented the South West of England and has had major playing experience with Troon and West Cornwall sides such as Penzance, Goldsithney and Rosudgeon. He is just what we need after the unfortunate loss of injured spinner Simon Johnson, and now adds some variation to what is becoming a really strong Camborne side, which I hope will challenge for silverware this term. However, this will not be an easy task as sides such as Helston, Paul, Penzance, St. Austell and Goldsithney to name but a few, will also be in the hunt".

"A lot of people are saying already that we are favourites to win the league, but I would not go as far to say this yet. It will take time for the new side to gel and although I feel a bit like Abramovich, minus the money, we all know how Chelsea are doing! With lots of hard work at the training sessions in the Winter, not only will it pull the 1st team together, it will also pull the whole Club together as it will without a doubt, strengthen our 2nds and 3rds as well."

If further players are interested in joining the talented squad that Paul Berryman is putting together, please contact him on 07939 712787

Jolly's Drinks Cornwall Cricket League AGM Report 14/1/04

Last night’s Jolly’s Drinks Cornwall Cricket League Annual Meeting at Truro saw clubs vote for the status quo on both the contentious issues of rearrangement of games due to bad weather and the rules concerning professionals and overseas players. After a lively debate the voting saw 57% in favour of continuing with rearranging games outside of the Premier League. However it would only have needed a handful of the 70 odd clubs present to change their view in order to reverse the decision.

The issue of professionals and overseas players was more clear cut with a proposal to lift the limitations being well defeated. The existing rules remain with clubs permitted to just one paid player, who must be qualified to play for England. Any Overseas players wishing to play in the League must continue to be resident in Cornwall before applying for clearance to play from the League and they must also demonstrate that they are in either remunerative employment or of Independent means from sources not connected with cricket.

One alteration that was passed was that fielding circles will be introduced into the Premier League for 2004. Clubs voted in the proposal from Grampound Road that will see a minimum of four fielders plus the bowler and wicket- keeper inside a 30 yard circle for the entire innings. This was in favour of an alternative proposal on offer that would have applied to the first fifteen overs only, as in International one-day cricket. The preferred option takes ‘pinch hitting’ out of the equation allowing batsmen to play a natural game.

All officers were re-elected unopposed with the exception of the post of Chairman following Jan Vatcha's recent, sudden death. With nominations for the agenda having needed 28 days notice Vice-Chairman Bruce Nicholls will fill the role until the LMC meet to confirm appointments in due course.

Camborne sign Nick Carter

Camborne Cricket Club's Director of Cricket, Paul Berryman writes , "I am pleased to announce, I believe to be the biggest signing at Camborne since Barry Purchase and Pete Davey joined the ranks, four years ago.

I am absolutely thrilled, that Nick Carter (pictured centre with Paul Berryman & skipper Malcolm Pooley ) from Grampound Road has decided to join Camborne for the forthcoming 2004 season. Nick is a proven Premier League and Cornwall all rounder, who will add 'steel' to the Camborne line up. Nick featured in the top 20 batsmen and bowlers in the Premier League last season with 500+ runs and 40 wickets. In a side such as Grampound, with their talented batting line up, this is no easy feat. He scored one of the best centuries I have seen last year, against Troon, when chasing 250 with four wickets down, Nick came to the crease, with his side rocking. What followed, was one of the near perfect innings that I have seen. Nick raced to a chanceless, undefeated century, which won the game for Grampound with overs to spare. Having played with him at Truro in the all conquering championship side of 1997, he has been one of the selected players that I have targeted over the last couple of months.

What makes it even better for me, the Club and cricket in general, is that the players we are signing, want to play for Camborne without seeking re-numerative packages. We made one approach for a professional late last year, which unfortunately fell through, but this has also been a blessing in disguise. Due to unforeseen financial implications at the time, no money has been made available to me to sign a professional. I believe Camborne do not now require one due to the quality of the players that we are signing."

Nick feels that it is not a step backwards by moving to Camborne, but rather a sideways step to a Club which has big ambitions. He is also looking forward to playing on what he believes to be one of the best pitches in the County."

"We are also moving closer to signing an Australian overseas player. Our bowling is looking extremely strong with seamers such as Nick, Malcolm, Scott Curnow and the Aussie, ably backed up by people such as Scott Harris who performed so well last year. The batting is also starting to shape up well, with Kevin Roberts, Malcolm, Nick, Nigel Hambly, Danny Mitchell and the Aussie. Hopefully, I will be also signing a local opening batsmen and a local middle order/off spinner shortly. With these signings, it shows that Camborne CC mean business, and will hopefully attract more players to the Club. Roll on May!" Training starts at Camborne, Pool and Redruth College on Sunday 1st February at 6pm.

New Date for Groundsman's meeting

The first Groundsmanship Association Meeting date has changed to Friday 6th February at Truro CC at 7.30pm

Camborne new signing

Camborne Cricket Club's Director of Cricket, Paul Berryman writes ,"I am pleased to announce a further new signing to the Club for the forthcoming season. "I am delighted to say, that Troon and former Camborne opening batsman, Kevin Roberts, has signed for the Club. Kevin is a proven player of Premier League quality, that will bolster our batting at the top of the order. He had a decent season at Troon last year, scoring some decent knocks of 50 or more, and we are sure that he will get the Camborne innings off to a solid start, and hopefully provide the backbone for other players to bat around him. He is a committed and dedicated player that always gives 100% on both match days and at training. This is a factor that Malcolm and I are keen to instil at the club right across the board from the 1st XI right through to the Youth Section. Kevin will also add a definite strength in the fielding department, being an excellent close fieldsman with a great pair of hands. We are now adding some serious playing experience to the squad with the acquisition of Kevin, Malcolm Pooley and Scott Curnow.

One unfortunate factor is the loss of spinner Simon Johnson, who suffered a freak accident at work the day after signing for the Club. He has badly damaged three of the four muscles holding his knee together and will be out for the season, and may struggle to play at a full competitive level again. The Clubs and my get well wishes go out to him. On a more positive note, there are three other players close to signing for the Club, with one in particular being very close indeed. We also have one of a possible eight overseas players to pick from in what has been a successful 'hunt'. This player will be revealed over the next couple of months. We expect him to also help draw a large crowd to Roskear, . I think that there will be at least four sides who will be challenging for promotion next year."

Off the field, the Club has appointed a new bar steward in Robert 'Obbo' Hosking, formerly of Tricky Dickies and other sports clubs. Robert has already attracted a good crowd to the Club, especially on Christmas and New Years Eves. 'Obbo' has previously worked at Trickie Dickies Wine Bar, Illogan Football Club and Blaythornes where he created an excellent crowd and atmosphere in the bar. He now plans to do the same at the cricket club. With the club now being open 7 nights a week plus Sunday lunchtimes, being in an excellent catchment area and above all cheap prices, the signs are good that there will be some good nights ahead at Camborne Cricket Club. The entrance to the club bar can be found in North Roskear Road, Camborne and 'Obbo' can be contacted at the club on 01209 715478

Indoor nets will commence at Camborne and Redruth College (formerly known as Cornwall College) on Sunday 1st Feb between 6pm and 8pm, and will run for nine weeks. All players, past, present and new are welcome. Camborne's first friendly has been announced for Sunday April 11th against Truro at Roskear, 1pm start. This will be a 45 over per side contest and will test Camborne's new players against one of the best sides in the premiership.
