Cornwall County Cricket Club have confirmed that they will be hosting Somerset County Cricket Club in a Twenty/20 match this summer. The game against the National Twenty/20 champions will be held at Truro Cricket Club on Monday 19th June at 5.30pm. The event will be primarily to raise funds for Youth Cricket in Cornwall and Somerset's beneficiary this year Richard Johnson.

The initiative has come from Somerset CCC who want to do something for Cornish and Devon cricket on the back of their Twenty/20 success last season. They will move on play Devon at Exmouth the following day as part of their build up to defend their title in this year's competition, which commences at the end of June.

Cornwall Team Manager Godfrey Furse is delighted with the news. He said " It will be excellent for our boys to test themselves against First Class opponents, in front of hopefully a large crowd. It is particularly beneficial as Minor Counties no longer have the opportunity to stage C & G Trophy games against first class opposition". Further details regarding arrangements and tickets will be issued in due course.

Redruth Cricket Club's President, and club stalwart, Peter Thomas, who has passed away at the age of 71. His name is synonymous with the 'Reds' in a long and distinguished career as both a player and administrator. It was only last season that he finally called it a day after a remarkable playing career that saw him play in over one thousand games for the club in the Cornwall Cricket League alone. His son David is a former captain of the club and in recent seasons three generations all played in the same league game with grandson Peter Junior also featuring.

Peter was also a former Chairman of the Cornwall Cricket Association before being instrumental in the formation of its successor, the Cornwall Cricket Board, at the beginning of 1996. He was elected the Board's inaugural vice-chairman. He organised the Western Indoor six-a-side competitions for a number of years and was also a keen follower of the County Club, regularly attending home games.

It will be at Redruth Cricket Club however that he will be missed most. Club Secretary Peter Sincock commented "As you will imagine we are all devastated at the Club. Peter was a legend in the 175 year history of the Club, representing it over a 50 year playing history at every playing level (and scoring 15,000 runs), holding every Officer post and never too proud to carry out all the essential routine duties and tasks that every Cricket Club has to undertake if it is too survive and succeed. He has left a gap that will need all the Club's efforts and will, if it is ever to be filled. For the sake of the legacy he has left, Club members will do all they can to honour his memory. Redruth CC, and we suspect Cornish cricket, are unlikely to see such a tremendous servant or ambassador again." The funeral is to be held on Tuesday 10th January at 1.00 p.m. at the Trelawny Chapel, Penmount Crematorium, Truro. Refreshments following the funeral will be available at Redruth C C Clubhouse.
