Cornish Cricket umpire Roy Strout, of Lanjeth, near St Austell, has been appointed to officiate the npower National Village Championship Final at Lord's on Sunday 12th September. Oxfordshire's Shipton-Under-Wychwood, who defeated Troon in the quarter finals, will play North Yorkshire's Sessay, who lost to Troon by 18 runs in the 1976 Lord's final. Former Gorran, Grampound Road and Roche seam bowler Strout began umpiring twenty years ago and after retiring from playing eight years ago became a full time Cornwall League panel umpire. He doesn't know how the appointment, which came out of the blue last week, came about but he did do some Elite Young Player games at Loughborough last year. The only previous Cornish umpire to officiate the Village final was the late Gerald Penberthy of Troon, who had the unique distinction of both umpiring and playing in it.

The final of the West Penwith Evening League between Ludgvan Cricket Club and Halsetown Cricket Club held at Penzance Cricket Club tonight (Tuesday).

In a 16 over a side game, Ludgvan CC batted first and scored 85 all out in 14 overs M Stevens 39 (2 x 6's & 2 x 4's) Andy Peters 4 for 6 runs, Ryan Venning 3 for 18, Aaron Rowe 3 for 23. Halsetown CC in reply scored 87 for 4 wickets in 13.5 overs. Ryan Venning 23 (3 x 4's), Ashley Weston 23 (1 x 6, 1 x 4), Terry Share 2 for 20.

Peter George, West Penwith Evening League Secretary and Treasurer of over 40 years, introduced League President John John Hardern to the spectators. John then presented the Arnold Eddy Trophy to the winning captain for Halsetown Kevin Nankervis. Kevin in reply thanked his team for their efforts during the season, and also congratulated Ludgvan CC on being promoted to League Division 1 next season.

Umpires Tim Boston & John Edwards adjudged the Man of the Match to be Andy Peters for his bowling effort of 4 wkts for 6 runs. Result Halsetown CC won by 6 wickets

County Twenty 20 Finals Day

After some consideration the League Management Committee has made the decision to carry the finals day over to the 2011 season due to the end of season congestion of fixtures.

St Just’s Cockspur Club Twenty 20 Area Final with Frocester (Gloucestershire) was abandoned on Sunday at Exmouth as a No Result. The ECB has determined that the replay will now take place on Sunday 5th September at Frocester with the winner going on to immediately play Wimbledon in the Regional Final that day at the same venue. The winner of that game goes forward to the televised National Finals Day at Hampshire’s Rose Bowl on 23 September.

With St Just now unavailable to participate in the County Twenty 20 Finals Day on the 5th September unfortunately there isn’t a viable alternative this season. Truro Cricket Club are hosting Cornwall Women v Northamptonshire Women in the ECB Women’s County Championship on Sunday 12th September. Additionally the previous day is the County Finals Day and should they get carried over to the Sunday, due to poor weather, it will put pressure on the provision of enough umpires for all the games plus league officials not being able to be at two venues on the same day.

Any thoughts of putting the County Twenty 20 day back to later in September have not been considered as it would be difficult to fit all three games in on the same day due to failing light. Thoughts for the placement of the day next year can be discussed at the Higher Tier meeting at the Cornwall Cricket Centre on Monday 13th September at 7.30pm.

Fowey Cricket Club Second Team have withdrawn from Division 4 East of the Cornwall Cricket League with immediate effect. This decision was reached at a meeting of the club Management Team this week. The migration of players returning to soccer, injuries and a lack of appetite for the game by some players has left the club trying to select two teams from only 16-17 players.

With the soccer season starting officially within the next few weeks this situation will not improve and it would be wrong for the club to be anything other than totally honest with the League at this difficult time. Our Club Captain will contact the Liskeard Club regarding this coming Saturday's away fixture to advise him that Fowey are unable to fulfill the match. The decision to withdraw the Second Team has not been taken without a great deal of thought and discussion. The Club regrets the inconvenience that this will cause the League Management Committee and the other clubs within the division.

The Vinter Cup Final on Wed 14 July at Camborne between St Just and Truro was called off following a torrential downpour shortly before 5pm. The umpires and captains agreed conditions were unplayable. The game will now be played next Wednesday 21 July at Camborne (6pm). The date has been brought forward 24 hours at the request of St Just CC due to the funeral of Committee Member Jimmy Thomas which is being held on Thursday afternoon. The W T Edwards Final will be played at St Austell on Tuesday 27 July at 5.45pm

Launceston CC have had a point reinstated in County Division One. A point had been deducted for an 'alleged slow over rate' against Redruth on 19 June but after an official investigation it has emerged an error was made in the calculations on the day.

Runciman Cup Final - St. Levan won the final of the Runciman Cup at a soggy St. Clare ground, Penzance, on Monday evening. Batting first Ludgvan, got off to a fair start, despite losing the wicket of skipper Lee Stevens early on. Reaching 33 off just five overs, and with the loss of just the one wicket, Ludgvan looked comfortable despite the very difficult conditions. Tim Hosking played with control but the runs proved more difficult to come by as the innings progressed, Ludgvan ending with a score of 123 for 4 in their 20 overs. The mist and rain cleared a little during the interval, as St. Levan chose to send in Jon Whitaker and Paul Angove to open their innings. A couple of chances were given Ludgvan, but not taken, and the St. Levan openers took full advantage. Whitaker was a semi-final hero with 81 not out a week earlier against Rosudgeon, and he was again in superlative form, hitting 93 not out to deservedly win the 'Dick Nicholls Memorial Trophy', for being the adjudged man of the match. St. Levan won the game with something to spare, passing Ludgvan's total in the fourteenth over to end on 127 for 2.

Ludgvan 123-4 (T Hosking 50no, M Stevens 34), St Levan 127-2 (13.2 overs) (J Whitaker 93no, P Angove 25). St Levan beat Ludgvan by eight wickets.

Andrew Barrett hit 6 sixes off the last over for Wadebridge 2nd XI at Werrington 3rds on Sat 3 July in Division Three East. Andrew Smeeth bowled the last over to Barrett, and with Wadebridge 204-8, Barrett proceded to move from 7no to 43no in 6 deliveries with 6 enormous maximums. A wide that took the over tally to 37 runs meant Wadebridge made 241-8 and went on to win by 75 runs, Barrett continuing his good day by taking 2-22 off 11 overs in Werrington's reply. The feat was previously achieved by Andrew Robinson who hit six sixes for Leedstown seconds against Gulvalseconds in Division 5 West on 20th May 2006. It is believed these are the only two occasions recorded in League history.

Andrew Barrett

The Runciman Cup holders Halsetown were beaten in the semi final by Ludgvan, at Penzance on Monday evening. Ludgvan will meet the winners of next Monday’s (5 July) second semi final between St Levan and Rosudgeon at Penzance C C at 6.30pm. The final takes place on Monday 12 July, also at Penzance (6pm).

Semi-final: Ludgvan 129 (M Stevens 54), Halsetown 100-9. Ludgvan beat Halsetown by 29 runs.

The second Runciman Cup semi-final was played on 5 July at Penzance Cricket Club between St Levan and Rosudgeon. Scores Rosudgeon 113 for 5 wickets T Ashton 35 not out, C Calfe 33. Paul Angove 2 for 31 St Levan 116 for 2 wickets Johnny Whitaker 81 not out, Geoff Preece 24 Result St Levan won by 8 wickets. The final will now be played between St Levan and Ludgvan (who beat Halsetown in the 1st semi-final). The game will be played at Penzance Cricket Club on Monday 12th July starting at 6:00pm

Falmouth Cricket Club will stage the Premier 50/50 Cup Final on Sunday 8 August between St Austell and St Just.

The ECB Premier League Fair Play Trophy is to be named in memory of long serving league umpire Lenny Lobb, who passed away earlier this year. The decision was confirmed after consultation with the ECB, the Cornwall Association of Cricket Officials, who award the weekly marks, and the Premier League clubs. They all gave their unanimous support in memory of the popular umpire who remarkably officiated league cricket continuously from1962 until last season

Grampound Road have been deducted one point due to a slow over rate in each of the Premier League games at St Austell on Sat 22 May, home to Paul (29 May) and at Truro (31 May). Paul have been deducted one point due to a slow over rate v Grampound Road on 29 May.

U17 National Cricket Cup Result Crypt School (Gloucestershire) v Truro College

Crypt 127 all out ( 36.5 overs) Truro College 131-4 ( 26.2 overs)

Truro College won the toss and elected to bowl first in damp conditions and had a success first ball of the day with Paul Smith ( Werrington) bowling Crypt captain Edge. Cayess (23) and Swattridge ( 21) survived the initial onslaught thanks to some good defense and generous Truro catching - should I say dropping - to put on 56 before they were separated by Adam Smith ( St Austell) who went on to take 3-17 off 7 overs with his medium pace. Skipper Dan Jenkin( Troon) also taking 3-17 and Dan Barretto ( Grampound Road) 2 - 17 being the pick of the bowlers as Crypt had a late rally from Roberts (26) to take them to 127 all out. Nicole Richards ( Paul ) impressed the local crowd with her outstanding fielding including an excellent catch. Truro lost skipper Jenkin surprisingly run out with 11 on the board before Adam Cocking Grampound Road) ( 48) and Jake Libby ( Callington) ( 40 not out ) put on 92 for the second wicket. Cocking, Smith and keeper Chapman (Werrington) all perished trying to finish the game in a hurry to prevent rain having any impact on the result. Truro travel again in the next round!

Sean Hooper Truro College Cricket Academy Director

Play Cricket amendments - Important to All Clubs

If a Club play cricket website administrator needs to amend a players date of birth or address or any spelling errors in accordance with the CCL rules regarding the annual review or at any other time, please send the details of the player and the amendments required by email to Michael Evans. Only the Cornwall Cricket League Play Cricket Administrator may amend these areas of a players registration or the player themselves may do so if they are also a registered play cricket website user which will be apparent as they will not have a * next to their name in the list of members of the website.

DO NOT send in a new registration of an existing player in order to amend these details on play cricket as this may lead to duplication of registrations. To assist Clubs we strongly support Clubs in placing on display the poster that was issued at the CCL AGM and also encourage players to register at www.play-cricket.com as a registered play cricket user. This will enable players to change their own details and also relieve club officials of some admin work.

Last year Cranfield University published the results of their studies into the rolling of cricket pitches. With ECB sponsorship, they are starting a further study into aeration. Part of this study is a questionnaire into current practices which they would like as many clubs as possible to complete. This is at http://www.survey.cranfield.ac.uk/aeration

The death has been announced of long serving Cornish Rugby and Cricket correspondent Paul Bawden, who died on Friday 12th March at the Royal Cornwall Hospital, followinga short illness, aged 77. Rugby was his life long passion but he also reported cricket for local newspapers going back to the 1960's. He was partially responsible for a number of club results in the Camborne/ Redruth / Penzance area for many years. When Bunny Williams, of Falmouth, passed away in 2001 he took on all the western results and this was expanded in 2003 when he headed a team covering the entire county with all results being centrally compiled from his Camborne base. The funeral service will be held at the Wesleyan Methodist Chapel, Station Hill, Redruth on Thursday 25th March at 12 noon, followed by a private cremation.

Truro College Cricket Academy group about to travel to Sri Lanka for a coaching camp in Colombo.

Itinerary - Fly from Heathrow on Thursday 18th March to Colombo. Start training camp immediately we arrive. Train at one of top grounds in Sri Lanka - England played there in 2007 - for 8 days with coaching organised by the Global Cricket School (who run the ECB overseas training programmes and also most first class counties winter overseas programmes) .

A typical day would be something like 830 am til midday - training session using quality local bowlers - particularly spin bowlers - for batmen to practice techniques and skills in sub continent conditions. The pitches are much drier and produce more spin and bounce than we are used to. Bowlers and wicket keepers also practice in tough conditions - heat, not much in it for seam bowlers etc. Midday get out of 40 degree heat for a few hours and return to team hotel. Late afternoon Fielding and fitness sessions at team hotel - running/swimming/stretching/strength/tactical and fielding practice. Evening - dinner and early to bed ready for early start each day Return Friday 26th March Tour party

The party of 16 ( 3 coaches and 13 players ) is headed by myself, Sean Hooper, Director Truro College Cricket Academy with Academy coaches Chris Hunkin and Nigel Sanders also going. Players include Cornwall's youngest ever Minor County player Taylor Williams from St Austell CC- who is on the Notts Academy - Premier league players Paul Smith ( Werrington) and Jake Libby ( Callington ) plus players from several other Cornish clubs including Falmouth, Truro, Newquay and Hayle. It should be an unforgettable trip with a high quality, intense cricket coaching environment and great preparation for the 2010 season.

Truro College's first fixture for 2010 is against Truro School in the new Under 17 National 40 over competition and the fixture list includes 2 games away against Nottinghamshire Academy/Under 17s and games against other cricket academies. Truro College are currently South West champions both indoors and outdoors and the fantastic new cricket facilities at the Cornwall Cricket Centre onsite have provided a great environment for the winter training programme which gives the players up to 10 and a half hours cricket each week throughout the year.

After a fantastic winter's traiinng in the excellent new facilities at Truro College the players can't wait to get outdoors and put their hard work into action. Those going to Sri Lanka will be embarking on an intense and high quality training camp using fabulous outdoor facilities and local coaches and practising against high quality cricketers - particularly spin bowlers. This can only benefit the development of our young players and ultimately the standard of cricket in Cornwall as a whole. It is a very exciting opportunity for all of the players and I look forward to seeing how they cope with the challenging weather and cricket conditions they will come up against - they need to be working outside of their comfort zones to really develop fully"

Sean Hooper Truro College Cricket Academy Director

Sadly the death has been reported of former Helston and Newquay cricketer Graham Drew. Following his retirement from playing he reported cricket for both BBC Radio Cornwall and Atlantic FM in recent years. He was also chairman of Newquay AFC and reported both football and cricket for the Newquay Voice newspaper. Notification of his death, on Saturday 23 January, and numerous tributes appear on the Cornish Soccer website forum.

He was a member of a Helston sporting family. Together with his three brothers, Tony, Peter and Barry, he played for Helston Cricket Club and represented the county at badminton. In a change of career he moved from managing a building society to the teaching profession around 1974 and began as Helston's second eleven wicket keeper. He progressed to become the first eleven's slow left arm bowler and annually featured well up the old Senior Division One Bowling Averages. He took 50 wickets in 1981 and 60 wickets in 1987, at an average of 13.96, finishing fifth in the standings. In 1995 he moved to Newquay and immediately took 40 wickets in County Division 2 in his first season for the club. He represented Cornwall Over Fifties making 24 championship appearances between 2000 and 2005.

Grahams Funeral Service will be held on the pitch at Mount Wise Football Ground, Newquay on Thursday 4th February 2010. Kick Off time is 1330 (one thirty pm). Graham's family have asked that there are no flowers but if you would like to make a donation it will be shared out between Newquay AFC, Newquay Cricket Club and Newquay Lions. After the service there will be a private ceremony at Penmount, Truro for family and guests only. Refreshments will be available in the clubhouse.

Due to a sad lack of demand, the Level 1 Umpire Training Course due to start at the Cricket Centre in Truro on 19th January has been cancelled. Information on future courses can be obtained from the Lead Tutor, John Middleton, on christine.middleton@homecall.co.uk "

CCL Divisions update

Since the Divisions were published in late November the following has happened during December. The issues have been resolved over the Christmas with grateful thanks to the clubs below for their prompt responses.

Botallack 2 have withdrawn from Div 7 West

Penzance 3 have withdrawn their application to rejoin Div 7 West.

Bude have withdrawn their first XI from Div 2 East to take the place of their seconds in Div 4 East, thus withdrawing their third XI from the league.

In order to fill the vacancy in Division 2 East, following consultations with all the clubs involved, the following will now take effect for 2010.

Newquay 2 - are additionally promoted to Div 2 E (Lanhydrock having already stated they did not wished to be reprieved relegation in order to rebuild in Div 3)

Launceston 2 - having not won a game in 2009 wish to be relegated to rebuild in Div 4 E

St Austell 3 are therefore promoted to Div 3 E as third placed finisher.

Fowey 2 are reprieved relegation from Div 4 E

Callington 3 are promoted to Div 5 E as third placed finisher (Menheniot Looe 4 ineligible to be reprieved under Rule 10.4)

Bude 2 (formerly 3) reprieved relegation in Div 6.

CCL Divisions 2010 update

The fixturing process is now able to commence as it can only be done as a whole once all divisions (east and west) are finalised. Needless to say if any other club envisages withdrawing a team before February please inform immediately.
