Yearbook goes to print

The Cornwall Cricket Yearbook 2003 has finally gone to print a week or so later than envisaged. The delay, due to the uncertainty around the make-up of the Premier League, will mean the publication date will be probably delayed until the beginning of the season, the weekend of 26th April. Details will appear on this site of ordering details etc in due course.

Mullion decide to stay in Premier League

After almost three weeks of uncertainty Mullion havedecided to carry on competing in the ECB Cornwall Premier League for the 2003 season with their 2nds playing in Division 4 West. As a result all league fixtures remain as published.

The Cornwall Cricket Yearbook will go to press on Monday, a week later then scheduled, with the publication date put back until around 25th April as a result.

Premier League saga continues

The saga as to who will compete in this year's Jolly's Drinks ECB Cornwall Premier League has taken another twist. Following Mullion's formal wish to withdraw from the Premier League, due to a shortage of suitable standard players, Paul C C in addition to Werrington and Camborne C C's have declined the offer to replace them for the forthcoming season. Camborne were asked firts and after their decision to say no the County Division 1 runners up Werrington then 3rd placed Paul (just 3 points behind) were both approached by the League.

As a result the League have had no alternative but to put the ball back into Mullion's court. They have been given the option of either continuing in the Premier League or taking over their 2nd XI fixtures in Division 4 West, with their 2nd XI moving down to the lowest division.. Consequently there will now be no need to alter any other team's fixtures across the divisions to accommodate 1st and 2nd XI's being home and away on the same day. However If Mullion do decide to withdraw from the Premier League the LMC will need to revise the Premier League fixtures with particular reference to the extra set of four games Mullion are due to play against Menheniot, St Buryan, Falmouth and Newquay.

It is understood Mullion will decide on Friday evening which division they will play in.

Mullion withdraw from Premier League

Arrangements for the forthcoming Jolly's Drinks Cornwall Cricket League season have been thrown into confusion with the decision of Mullion C C to withdraw from the ECB Cornwall Premier League.

In a formal letter to the league they state "It is with much regret that Mullion CC is requesting to be replaced in the Premier League. Due to the loss of half of last season's team, we would be unable to field a side that would justify its Premier League status. We have looked at all options for the forthcoming season & it is our feeling that the best option for both ourselves & also for the Premier League would be for another side to take our place. Although we realise that this request has come close to the start of the season we have only recently found out that some of our players have joined other clubs. It would be detrimental to our club to continue as a Premier side, as having to ask players who are used to playing in Div 4 West to play against County standard players would do neither the individual or the status of the league any good at all."

The League are seeking a replacement with, in the first case as the League rules dictate, Camborne would not be relegated. They have been offered a reprieve and at time of going to press the League awaits a decision from them.

The consequences affecting the League fixtures could well be widespread with a number of clubs being affected due to the complex fixturing that ensures club's first and second XI's having opposite home and away fixtures on a match day irrespective of the division they play in. Clubs are advised to delay their fixture card printing until matters have been confirmed.

Sharp re-elected County captain

Berryman confirms retirement

One of the leading fast bowlers in the county over the last decade or so, Paul Berryman of Camborne, has had his retirement from the game confirmed medically. Paul, who featured in a number of one day games for Cornwall last year, announced his retirement during the summer. His final game at the end of September was against a Northamptonshire XI for aCornwall XI in Anthony Penberthy's Benefit match at Troon. His final wicket was Malachy Loye. Apart from a season at Truro, where he helped them to the title Paul played all his cricket for the Camborne club a little more than a throw from his Roskear home.

In a statement today he says "My retirement has been confirmed by the doctors as I have to see a specialist concerning my left knee and more worryingly, I have to have physiotherapy with referall to an orthopaedic surgeon concerning my spine. I can no longer walk for more than 15 minutes without feeling discomfort and pain in my right side. Not good for someone at 33!!
