Record breaker signs for Camborne

Camborne CC Media Release: Camborne's Director of Cricket, Paul Berryman, is delighted to announce his sixth signing for the 2004 season. 'Ian Goldsworthy, the Praze record breaking opening batsman (1587 runs in 2003) has decided to join Camborne after training with us in the winter nets. It was a tough decision for him to leave Praze, but after chatting with myself and the Club captain, Malcolm Pooley, he has joined us because he wants a new challenge, to play in a higher standard and to play in a new, exciting team. Ian has fitted in immediately with the rest of the guys and the already good club spirit, has just got even better. This signing has given us the extra firepower in our batting department, and we now have an extremely strong top seven, with Ian lining up alongside Kevin Roberts, Malcolm Pooley, Nick Carter, Nigel Hambly, Danny Mitchell and Scott Harris. We also have three hard hitting batsmen in Darren Shorland, Mark Bawden and Scott Curnow, although I would hope that these guys can put their feet up while the top seven do the business!" 'I am extremely happy, because all of the targeted players that I have approached, bar one, have joined the Club. We now have an extremely good balance side, and with three more signings to come, our squad will be at full strength. Our 2nds will also have more backbone and stability to the side and I am also pleased that Camborne rugby player Nigel Endean will be the 2nd XI Captain, ably supported by his new vice captain, Club stalwart Mark Pascoe

New League Vice-Chairman and Committee Members

The Jolly's Drinks League Management Committee have announced that the position of league vice-chairman has been taken up by Mr Reg Osborne. The post became vacant after Bruce Nicholls moved up to the position of League Chairman, following the death of Jan Vatcha. Mr Osborne from St Hilary, near Penzance, is a former Helston player and has taken over as the Cornwall Umpires & Scorers Association Chairman in addition to being Appointments Secretary.

The LMC have also filled the four vacancies on the committee, which were carried over from January's AGM. The following have agreed to be co-opted with immediate effect: Messrs John Buddle (Camborne CC), Arthur Edwards (Paul CC), Steve Nicholls (Long Rock CC) and Malcolm Roberts (formerly Fowey CC).

League want 10 Premier Teams in 2005

The LMC have also announced, that, it is their wish to have ten teams in the ECB Premier League in 2005 to avoid byes featuring in the fixtue schedules.. Only nine teams will compete this season due to St Buryan's withdrawal, with each team playing 24 games over 27 match days. It is the League's wish for the bottom team in the Premier League to be replaced by the top two teams in County Division 1 at the end of the season. The composition however will be subject to approval, and verification, at Lord's by the ECB Premier League's Assessment Panel.

Falmouth go out of National Sixes at Bath

Falmouth's Indoor team failed to continue the good form they had shown in the build up to their regional semi final of the ECB Indoor Six-a-side National Competition. Having made the long trip to Writhlington School near Bath, Falmouth took on Shanklin CC from the Isle of Wight, who had defeated the winners of the Hampshire league the week before. Shanklin won the toss and elected to bat, and got off to a slow but steady start, managing to accelerate throughout their innings, assisted by Falmouth who conceded an unprecedented 22 wides. Despite Antony Angove picking up three wickets in the last over Shanklin posted the imposing total of 124 All out.

In reply Falmouth were just behind the required run rate when they were unfortunate to lose their captain Larry Martin after a freak ricochet from the corner of a door frame saw him run out by some distance. Mark Burley held the innings together, and despite seeing wickets fall around him reached 25 and was forced to retire. Having lost further wickets, Burley returned to the crease and set about reaching the target by himself, and did well to get to the last over requiring 16 to win. Sadly Burley was run out from the 3rd ball of the last over for a well-made 51 leaving Falmouth 13 runs short as they were all out for 111. It was a disappointing end to a campaign that had seen Falmouth go 9 games unbeaten, but will no doubt provide good experience prior to starting all over again in October this year.

Under 21's Competition axed

The aftermath of the England v Zimbabwe affair, in last year's ICC World Cup, will have an effect on Cornish Cricket this year. The ECB have been faced with a shortfall of over £2 million following England's refusal to play in Harware, which meant the ICC withheld their share of World Cup profits. As a result reductions have been made across the ECB including the recreational game. As a result the ECB Under 21 competition has been abandoned for 2004. Cornwall did well in the ECB 38 Counties one-day games last year, which had replaced Under 19 two-day cricket. There were wins away to Somerset and Dorset and a dramatic last ball defeat at Truro against Devon, who went on to win through to the national final, where they played Lancashire at the County Ground, Derby. Cornwall's final group game, which proved to be academic, saw a revenge win for Somerset at St Austell. With the prospect in 2004 of no representative cricket between Under 17 and full County level the County Club will be looking to, possibly, provide some Under 19 matches if fixtures can be arranged . Under 21 Manager Mr Dick Collins is "most disappointed" that the National structure has been abolished following on from last year's decisions to end the 38 County competition for the Senior County XI and Under 19 two-day games. It now means there is no County Board adult recreational cricket available across the country.

1st round of C & G axed

The first Round of the 2005 Cheltenham & Gloucester Trophy has also been abandoned. Played at the end of the season over recent years all twenty Minor Counties (plus for a couple of years the Board XI's of first class counties) gained automatic entry with successful teams winning through to the lucrative second round, at home to first class opposition. Cornwall's defeat, by just 12 runs in Amsterdam against the Netherlands last August, means the Dutch will have a home tie against Gloucestershire in May, with Cornwall missing out for the first time in four years following visits of Sussex, Worcestershire and Kent. The abolition of the first round means only half the Minor Counties will be able to compete in the 2005 C & G. They will be the two finalists in the MCCA K O Trophy competition plus the top eight counties, based on their points totals in the overall Minor Counties championship (East & West Divisions ). It is understood that these ten teams will join the likes of Scotland and Ireland and go straight into the second round with the First Class Counties.

ECB cut grants

A third reduction announced is a cut in the grant to each ECB Premier League. However the reduction, following on from a previous administration grant cut to each County Board, will not affect the £750 annual grants paid to each of the Premier League clubs at present. The ECB have though stated that possible future cuts may be required this year if a satisfactory resolution of the issues surrounding England's proposed autumn tour to Zimbabwe cannot be achieved
