HAMPSHIRE O50 Truro      scorecard

After a steady start Cornwall put the Hampshire bowlers under some pressure with good running and powerful hitting only to lose Anton Luiten to a very tight run out. The Cornwall run rate dried up until David Jenkin came in to raise the tempo after a score of 240+ had looked on the cards. Hampshire got a way to a quick start with a first wicket stand of 125 in 24 overs, which was helped by some excessive wide bowling to make things easier to keep up with the required run rate. They won with five overs to spare.

CORNWALL O50 218-5 (A Luiten 73, D Jenkin 43no; A Weeks 1-33, S Mitchell 1-34, P Nickson 1-36, A Yorke 1-42),

Having got the worst of a draw against Palmers last week the opponents last Wednesday were the Mendip Acorns, a long established club from Somerset. Played on the lovely and beautifully kept ground at Luckett the game saw the setting of a remarkable record by Cornwall. Winning the toss skipper Geoff Husband had no hesitation in choosing to bat and his decision was fully justified when Dave Philips (94) and Ian Mill (87) put on no fewer than 215 runs for the first wicket. Sadly both fell short of well deserved hundreds but they enabled the declaration to come at 226-2. This was a quite reasonable target as last year the Acorns chased and got 246 in the same fixture. However, history was not to repeat itself and wickets fell steadily to some good bowling by Alan Parker (4-48) and Derek Foster (3-48) and three fine catches by Rick Grundy on the long-on boundary. The visitors had no choice but to close up shop at the fall of the 7th wicket but they could not be winkled out and salvaged a draw, finishing on 135-8.
