SOMERSET Pencarrow    playcricket full card

Cornwall came back to earth with a bump with an 85 run defeat at the hands of Somerset at Pencarrow. The visitors were never really in trouble as they progressed to 181-3 in the first 35 overs. Sadly, from Cornwall's point of view, the last 10 overs produced 91 runs and a target of 252 proved well beyond their capabilities. But in the 29th over , with the score standing at 70-5, Lloyd Sluman strode to the wicket and with a swashbuckling innings proceeded to demolish the Somerset attack. His innings of 81 included 7 sixes, 6 fours and came from a mere 32 balls. If ever a batsman deserved a hundred it was he, but fate would not have it and he fell to an excellent catch in the deep. Slocombe, with 7-47, was by far the best bowler of the day and would probably won the man of the match award had there been one. But it was Sluman's innings that will stay in the memories of all those fortunate enough to witness it.

Somerset 252-7 ( Ashton 46, Botton 36, Cooke 40no, Reeves 28, Ashford 22, Butler 3-48, Roberts 2-31 ) Cornwall 167 ( Sluman 81, Williams 25, Botton 2-8, Slocombe 7-47 ) Lost by 85 runs

16th Wed - 2pm

DEVON Hatherleigh

On a perfectly reasonable pitch the first eight "batsmen" could only muster 39 runs between them which, with a few extras, left us at 54-8 in the 26th over. A modicum of respectablity was brought about by a 9th wicket stand of 40 by Tony Roberts and Alan Parker, who top scored with 19, taking the final total to 96, including 22 extras. Nick Rogers was Devon's top bowler with 4-10 from his 9 overs. Devon comfortably took their score to the required 97, in 17 overs, for the loss of 4 wickets.

Cornwall 96 ( A Parker 19; Rogers 4-10, Tidball 2-22, Wilson 2-9 ) Devon 97-4 (Shepherd 46, K Kelly 3-26 ) Devon (2pts) beat Cornwall by six wickets

Somerset 180-4 Ashfold 63, Ashton 62, Reeves 36. Lost by 6 wkts.

Cornwall failed to capitalise on a brisk opening stand of 83 by Neil Harvey and Stuart Ellis, playing in his first Championship game. Wickets fell steadily after they went and, on a perfect pitch, 179 was never going to be enough to trouble the home side. So it proved and good knocks by Ashfold, Ashton and Reeves saw their side to victory with 11 overs to spare.

HAMPSHIRE at Paultons Scorecard

Hampshire 279-6 Hall 63, Wood 63,Rawlings 39no, Britton 28, Swain 2-33, Butler 2-42

Cornwall 75-2 Philips 31no Match abandoned, rain. Hampshire won on faster scoring rate

Cornwall's attack never seemed likely to control some positive batting by the home side. A pulled hamstring prevented Polkinghorne bowling more than four overs and this did not help matters. Voyzey's five overs, taking 1-29, helped to plug the gap, but the total of 279 was a formidable one. A disappointing day ended when steady rainfall led to the abandonment of the game after only 21 overs of the Cornwall innings, with Hampshire having a superior run-rate.

Thurs 21st June WILTSHIRE Trowbridge Postponed to 10 July at venue to be announced
Sun 24th June DORSET Menheniot (change of venue)Postponed to 12 July at Lanhydrock
Sun 8th July

DEVON Truro

Devon 109-3 ( Shepherd 38, Whitby 25no, Cock 2-35) Devon won by 7wkts.

In a game reduced to 40 overs, due to heavy rain late in the morning, Devon won the toss and asked the home side to take first innings. Tight bowling and a slow pitch made scoring difficult to the extent that Cornwall could only muster 108 runs and were all out in the 38th over. Devon made light of the conditions and reached their target, with few alarms, in the 31st over. Shepherd batted solidly in making his 38 and Sluman was the pick of the bowlers with just 17 runs from his 8 overs.
