With two games remaining ST JUST’S lead was cut to 19 points after they could only manage a losing draw against visiting TRURO. They ended 23 runs short of victory with one wicket remaining. Saturday 22 August

The title race looks all but over after two dramatic finishes at either end of the county. St Just had a last gasp home win over Falmouth, taking the final wicket with just three balls to spare. Meanwhile Werrington could only draw with Callington when Werrington’s last pair had needed three off the final over. It means St Just’s advantage has been increased to 28 points, with just three games remaining. Had Werrington won and Falmouth drew the gap would have been only 15 points.

ST JUST gave an impressive batting performance at home to FALMOUTH making 255-6. Neil Curnow (55) and David Roberts (28) got them off to a flying start with 50 coming in five overs. The pair put on 81 and were backed up by Gary Thomas (45), Gavin Edwards (29) and Gareth May’s 59 with Nick George making 22. Jon Udy took three for 25. A routine win looked likely as Falmouth slipped to 77 for six before Antony Angove made 74. He was dismissed in the 47th over but the last pair of Mark Burley (17no) and George Popperwell (20) almost survived eight overs for the draw before Thomas had Popperwell caught at slip. CALLINGTON were 50 for seven at WERRINGTON before being rescued by Aiden Libby (67) and Jamie Hatch (44) who added 88 for the eighth wicket as the visitors posted 166. Darren Johns took four for 25 after Ian Worsnip removed the top order, taking three for 24 from 14 overs. After losing four wickets for 60 Matt Robins (62) and Adam Hodgson (18) added 55. Libby took five for 35 including Robins caught behind. The last pair of Darren Johns and Worsnip came together needing fifteen. This was reduced to three off the last over but Luke Davis bowled a maiden to give Callington their first positive result of the season. ST AUSTELL gained revenge for last Sunday’s Hawkey Cup Final defeat with a 43 run win at Wheal Eliza over NEWQUAY. In a game reduced to 100 overs St Austell were wobbling at 40 for five before Sean Hooper made 53 with Andrew Libby and Gary Bone both making 36 in the 181 for seven. After losing openers Martin Pearce and Joe Crane without scoring Rob Harrison made 38 and Jim Newnham 23 in the 138 all out. Gary Bone took three for 21 with spinners Libby and David Neville taking four for 53 between them in 25 overs. In the other game PAUL travelled to TRURO but the game was cancelled with the ground too wet.

St Austell - St Austell 181-7 (S Hooper 53, A Libby 36, G Bone 36no; R Spall 4-39, R Harrison 3-65),

Newquay 138 (R Harrison 38, J Newnham 23; G Bone 3-21, D Neville 2-23, A Libby 2-30).

St Austell (19 points) beat Newquay (four) by 43 runs. Match reduced to 100 overs. Newquay deducted 1 point due to slow over rate.

Saturday 15 August

St Just's chances of retaining their title strengthened despite them being inactive. Paul agreed to delay their clash at Hutchens Park by 24 hours due to the wedding of all rounder Mark George. The celebrations were helped along by the news that both their title rivals dropped points with Werrington dropping seven and Truro thirteen. There was an amazing game at Falmouth where the home team's last pair, Mark Burley and Jeff Carvelly hung on for two overs to draw. Matt Robins and Ben Smeeth both made 20's for the visitors but they were struggling at 91 for eight after 32 overs. Adam Hodgson (33) and Sam Hockin (35no) rescued the innings to get to 155 for nine. Carvelly took four for 42. Falmouth looked to be cruising at 114 for 1 with eleven overs to go. Jon Udy made 52, Larry Martin 27 and Antony Angove 21. Then, dramatically, eight wickets fell for 13 runs. Alex Smeeth, back from injury, took four for 21 off 14 overs. Truro's chances must have gone after losing by eight runs, off the last ball, at St Austell in a thriller. St Austell amassed 268 for seven thanks to Dan Jarman's 103, Mike Bone's run a ball 54 and Sean Hooper's 33. Chris Hunkin took three for 69. Truro, without skipper Tom Sharp, were kept in the game thanks to Chris Martin's 81 and Chris Hunkin, who made 93 before being out in the penultimate over at 252-9. Gary Bone trapped Joe Dale off the last ball of the match to snatch victory. To add to Truro's misery a slow over rate cost them a point. Callington's disappointing season continued with a 107 run defeat at Newquay. Requiring 167 they crashed to 60 all out a fourteenth successive defeat. Newquay skipper Joe Crane made 33 and Jim Newnham 20 but at 98 for seven the home team were struggling. Dan Stephens (33) and Tom Eggins (12) added 38 for the eighth wicket before Stephens and Danny Brooks (12) put on 31 for the ninth. Dan Davis took six for 30 from 16 overs. Callington's openers Danny Lee (20) and Jake Libby put on 24 before the innings collapsed with all ten wickets falling for just 36 runs. Saturday 25th April

The 2009 Jolly’s Drinks Cornwall Cricket League season started where last year’s left off with the weather dominating the opening day. Torrential overnight downpours followed by frequent blustery showers saw a wash out in the west of the County. Further east play was possible before the weather set in during the afternoon. The Premier games at Werrington and Callington were able to get away on time. Nick George took the first wicket of the season when he trapped Werrington’s Oliver Bailey lbw. He followed up by dismissing Mark Horwell for 4. The Smeeth brothers came to the home team’s rescue to add 90 for the third wicket. They saw the hundred up before Alex was run out for 35. Ben was caught off the bowling of Gary Thomas for 61 shortly before a third interruption for rain drove the players off for the day. The game had already been reduced to 39 overs. Werrington reached 125 for 4 with five overs remaining. Nick George took two for 7 from six overs. Callington made a good start at home to Falmouth reaching 77 for 2. However a collapse saw then all out for 116 in 34.2 overs in a game reduced to 36 overs following interruptions. Dan Davis made 41 with support from Jon Parsons with 15 and Andy Shorten (12). Joe White made 16 down the order. Duncan Ayres took three for 12 and Jon Udy three for 16. Mark Burley claimed four victims behind the stumps. Falmouth were unable to start their reply before the weather set in. The heavy rain in West Cornwall overnight saw Paul’s home game with Newquay a morning cancellation. Likewise St Austell’s visit to Truro was also called off with no hope of play at a soggy Boscawen Park.
