The Jolly's Drinks Cornwall Cricket League's Management Committee have confirmed the relegation of Callington from the ECB Cornwall Premier League to County Division 1 for the 2006 season. The Committee met on Thursday and discussed a formal request from Callington Cricket Club that their 1st XI be relegated with immediate effect. Relegation was not deemed automatic this year, following the withdrawals of Menheniot and Helston. However, it was the general view at a meeting of Premier League clubs, with the LMC at the beginning of July, that the bottom club, if wished, be allowed to go down.

It would enable an eight team division to be formed, playing each other on three occasions in 2006 rather than the proposed 2007. In order to facilitate a reduction to eight teams at the earliest opportunity, and to achieve a suitable format of twenty-one '110 over' time games, the LMC have thus taken the decision to relegate Callington. Next season teams will play on Saturdays and Bank Holidays only, suitably interlinking with 2nd XI fixtures, and only have one blank day early in the season.

The decision to move to an eight club Premier Division endorses the views of the ECB who in a recent letter to the League have stated "The ECB has never insisted that there must be 10 clubs in the Premier League. We were not prepared to allow more than 10 because of concerns about the impact on the overall standard of cricket, and the recent problems clearly suggest that this view was justified. There is no reason why the Premier League should not operate with a smaller number of clubs, with these clubs playing each other more frequently. It is obviously important that the League structure reflects the wishes of the clubs and the players, but it is also important that the standard of cricket is as high as possible and it is difficult to see that this objective can be achieved by returning to a League of 10 clubs".

County Division 1 champions Hayle are promoted to the top flight while Beacon and Goldsithney are relegated to Division 2 West.

CCL Press Release 8th July following a meeting with Premier League clubs.

"Clubs unanimously agreed that the Premier League should be reduced to eight teams at the earliest opportunity, playing each other three times on Saturdays and Bank Holidays only. The games can be fixtured alongside the existing Cornwall League twenty-two match season with each team having just one bye within the first month of the season. All twenty-one games would be of the '110' over time format. The aim is to achieve an eight team division by the 2007 season at the latest. However it was agreed that the present league rules must be adhered to for this season regarding promotion from County 1, with the top team eligible, subject to the necessary criteria being met. As two teams have withdrawn the eighth placed team in the Premier League will not be relegated, unless it is their wish, at the end of this season. Should nine teams compete in 2006, at the end of the season there would be two down and 1 up to provide eight teams for 2007."

The Jolly's Drinks Sunday Cup Final, which was scheduled for Redruth on Sunday 18th September, has been officially cancelled by the League. The competition has been hampered due to the withdrawals of clubs from the competition, concessions and bad weather. The prospective finalists, St Blazey & Paul have only actually won on the field one and two games respectively of the seven originally scheduled.

The Jolly's Drinks Sunday Complementary Cup Final will take place on 18th September at Roche CC 1.30pm between Lanhydrock v Wendron
