First for Cornish Cricket News

Welcome to Issue 4/1 of the CCUA newsletter.

The Association AGM was held at Truro CC on 3rd Oct, 2001. John Ford was re-elected President. The committee and officers were re-elected with a few changes. Vice chairman David Rowe, who has moved to Exeter to live, resigned and was replaced by Reg Osborne. David Richards was replaced as examinations officer by Jim Stevens, and John Middleton replaced David on the Committee. Dates of the full meetings to be held during 2001/2 are again the first Wednesday of alternate months, to be held at Truro Cricket Club at 7.30 p.m. The dates of these meetings are: -

December 5th

February 6th

April 3rd

June 5th

August 7th

October 2nd [AGM]

Qualifications

I am updating the list of names and addresses that will be passed to Michael Weeks for inclusion in the League handbook for the 2002 season. Please let me have any changes of address, telephone numbers, mobile telephones, etc. The handbook will again distinguish between "active umpires" and other CCUA members (i.e. "resting" umpires and scorers). Please give me an indication whether you will

  1. be umpiring next season, or
  2. be remaining as a member, even though you will not be an active umpiring member.

If you are coming back to active umpiring from last season’s sabbatical, welcome back.

Subscriptions

May I remind you that subscriptions are now overdue, and are still at a minimal £5 per year. This subscription covers not just your membership fee, but also insurance cover whilst travelling to and from an appointment, as well as while officiating at an appointed fixture.

For Sale

I have a new batch of CCUA shirts in stock – I have most sizes except 16½. These are on sale at £8.50 each. I also have a small number of ties, sweaters, coat and blazer badges. Those of you who have been given a new coat by the Post Office will need a coat badge ! I will be operating my car boot sale at the December meeting, so bring plenty of cash. In addition, I still have a number of copies of the "Laws of Cricket – 2000 edition" handbook, which will be on offer at £2.50 each.

News

The major news item still revolves around the future of the Premier League. You will probably be aware that the CCL have asked the ECB for permission to extend the League to 12 teams for the 2002 season, but may not be aware that the ECB have said no, and that, if we move to a 12 team league anyway, they will withdraw our funding and Premier League status. Watch this space, or keep up with the latest developments on the Cornwall cricket website at www.cornwall-cricket.org

Law Corner

You will probably remember from last year that there was a law regarding wicket keeping gloves, which, after some discussion, was held in abeyance until glove manufacturers got their act together. This law will be re-implemented for 2002 !

Despite all of the fears surrounding the advent of penalty runs, you may find it reassuring that no penalty runs were awarded in the Cornish Cricket League last season.
