Cornwall v Devon at Rosudgeon CC on Sunday 4th August The Cornwall Women's County team produced an excellent display to defeat Devon in their opening South West Counties Championship game.. Needing a modest 127 from their 40 overs Cornwall's openers Viv Searle, playing on her home ground, and Falmouth's Sue Leathley all but did the job themselves. Batting sensibly with runs coming at around three per over throughout the innings they put on 114 for the first wicket. Leathley was lbw to Kathy Griffin for 44. There was an 'unfortunate' dismissal when Kathy Billing was run out by the bowler, backing up at the non strikers end, for 7 but Searle cracked the winning four through extra cover soon after to start the Cornish celebrations. Searle ended on 57 having hit 7 fours as the target was convincingly passed with over 6 overs to spare. Earlier an excellent display in the field restricted the Devon total. Women's South West CDO Jackie Summers dominated the Devon top order hitting 44 in good time. After her dismissal at 55-3 the Cornish bowlers got on top. All six bowlers used bowled tidily but star of the show was young Tideford player Karen Shepley of who had superb figures of 2 for 10 off 8 overs. Falmouth's teenager Clare Williamson, who is a regular Cornwall League player for Wendron, and Rosudgeon's Adele Jewell also took a couple of wickets apiece as wickets continued to tumble. With Somerset having withdrawn from the Championship Cornwall can win the title when they play Dorset at Werrington on Sunday 18th August. They follow this game with an 'international' match against Holland to be played at Axminster, Devon on Wednesday 21st August.
