Cornwall County Women 2004

South West Counties Championship

Devon 116 Cornwall 117-4 at Grampound Road CC on Sunday 15th August

In an excellent display of swing and seam bowling Devon were restricted to 116 all out in the 47th over of 50. After being put in Devon reached 53 before losing their second wicket at the halfway mark. Rosudgeon's Fern Nicholls, in an excellent second spell, took 4-8 to end with figures of 5-16 from 8.4 overs. Fourteen year old Melissa Rowe, on her debut, bowled excellently at the start only conceding 6 runs from her first five overs. She took 2-17 from 8 overs. Katy Whitaker bowled tidily to take 1-26 from 10 overs while Katy Renfree and Adele Jewell took a wicket apiece and conceded under two runs an over. Claire Williamson held three excellent catches in the outfield. Opener Jodie Mills made 29 and Cricket Development Officer Jackie Summers hit 25 but Devon's last seven wickets fell for 21 runs.

Cornwall lost openers Viv Searle and Emma Pascoe with only 10 on the board. Williamson made 15 before being dismissed at 61 but the win was accomplished thanks to a fine 47 from fifteen year old Natasha Weeks that included 8 boundaries. Rowe completed a fine debut to end on 21 not out as victory came with 19 overs to spare. Cornwall now meet Dorset at Callington on Sunday (noon) in a Championship decider, with Dorset already having beaten Devon.
