Three teams, Falmouth Ladies, Rosudgeon WCC and Truro Ladies, competed in the Cornwall Women & Girls' Eight-a-side cricket festival at Truro School on Sunday 20th May 2001 and with some of the best weather this season a fun and enjoyable day was had by all.

Each team played one another twice in 10 over per innings matches with 3 points awarded for a win, 2 points for a draw and 1 point for a loss. Truro Ladies put in a commendable effort but it was Rosudgeon WCC after winning their first three matches with ease came up against Falmouth Ladies in the last match of the day.

With only two points between the sides Falmouth Ladies batted first and compiled 76 for the loss of 2 wickets, V Booth scoring 24. Rosudgeon started well with R Eustice (Captain) scoring 35 before being dismissed by an excellent catch by V Booth. Then two further wickets fell to some good bowling by W Griffiths, this left Rosudgeon needing 2 runs to win the match and competition but could only manage 1 run for the draw.

With each team gaining 2 points from the draw Rosudgeon snatched victory by 2 points to win the Cornwall Women's Club Cricket Shield for the second year running. Umpires for the festival were J Stevens and D Rowe who freely gave of their time. Peter Grant ECB County Development Officer, who made the presentations, commented on the improved standard of cricket since last year and thanked all involved in organising the festival including Truro School who provided an excellent pitch for the competition.

Another festival is scheduled for Sunday 19th August 2001 and any women & girls' teams who might like to enter should contact Jackie Summers ECB Women's Club Development Officer on 01364 652588 or Peter Grant ECB County Development Officer on 01209 310206.

Rules

Playing Conditions

The normal laws of cricket will apply except:

Matches will be eight a side and with a maximum of 12 overs per side. N.B. if teams wish to field seven or six players per side then this can be done by arrangement between captains / tournament organiser.

No bowler may bowl more than 4 overs.

The batting order of teams will be fixed as follows. Positions 4-8 must be occupied by the wicket keeper and those that are bowlers. This leaves positions 1-3 for those who are not bowlers, but obviously in the event of more than four bowlers being used, extra bowlers will have to occupy these positions.

Deliveries that bounce more than once before reaching the batter, and are not strikeable will be deemed as no balls.

There will be a 3 run penalty for wides and no balls, but no extra delivery.

If in the discretion of the umpire wides / no balls are being bowled as a run saving tactic in the last over of the innings extra deliveries may be awarded.

There will be 3 points for a win, 2 for a tie and 1for a loss.

In the event of a tie there will be a count back to wickets.

The CCB Women & Girls Trophy will once again be played for, but the main idea of the day is for fun and enjoyment for everybody, as well as the chance to meet and pit your skills against players from other sides. In the event of any disputes the decision of the tournament organiser will be final Timings

The day is planned to start at 10.30 AM and finish by approximately 6.00 PM. It is anticipated that matches will take approximately 1 hour to complete. In order to fit all matches in it is important that we move quickly between overs, innings and matches. If the tournament runs behind schedule it may be necessary for the tournament organiser to amend the number of overs per match. With the co-operation of players and captains this should not be necessary. Please pay close attention to PA announcements giving details of which teams are playing.
