Festival 2000 was the fourteenth year of the festival with 52 teams ranging from under 11 to under 17 amounting to some 500 youngsters, both boys and girls, from around the county competing over the six days. The festival does much for the development of cricket by bringing together young players from across the county in an atmosphere of fun and enjoyment leaving them with a positive perception of the game, something which we must all endeavour to achieve given recent events. We were privileged to have Sir Tim Rice present the trophies and prizes for the Under 11 competition on the opening day. He was impressed by the scale of the festival and the atmosphere in which it was played, so much so that he has agreed to become Patron of the festival. Sir Tim's patronage has already proved invaluable as the Lord's Taverners Foundation have provided support for Festival 2001 in the form of four team bags of cricket equipment as the major prizes in each competition. On the Thursday evening we staged a senior invitation match between a Cornish eight and an Overseas eight based on the exciting 'Cricket Max' format, which originated in New Zealand. This exciting version of cricket helps to stimulate an interest in the game especially in youngsters who enjoy the colourful kit and style of play. We believe that this is one of the largest cricket youth festivals in the country and hope to expand it further in the coming years by inviting more teams from out of the county and including a girls competition, the more youngsters we get playing this great game of ours then the more chance it will have to survive and prosper. Finally I would like to thank the many sponsors and supporters of Festival 2000, the committee who work tirelessly during the festival, the umpires who give their time freely, St Gluvias Cricket Club, Penryn Cricket Club and Penryn College for the use of their facilities. But most of all thanks to the players, their team managers/organisers and parents for making the festival what it is. Look forward to seeing you all again at Festival 2001, 5th to 10th August.
