The Cornwall Youth Festival

2001 Review

The Cornwall Youth Cricket Festival (CYCF) has already benefited from the patronage of Sir Tim Rice the well-known cricket enthusiast and lyricist. Through Sir Tim's introduction to the Lords Taverners Foundation they have decided to provide four cricket bags each of which contains a complete set of team equipment worth hundreds of pounds. These will be used as the winners' prizes in each of the age group competitions at under 11, 13, 15 and 17.

Sir Tim, who will be formerly adopted as patron of the CYCF at its Annual General Meeting, presented the trophies and prizes for the under 11 competition at last year's festival. He was impressed by the scale of the festival, which is believed to be the largest youth cricket festival in the country, and offered to assist in what ever way he could.

SUNDAY 5TH AUGUST 2001 YOUTH CRICKET FESTIVAL GETS UNDER WAY

The Cornwall Youth Cricket Festival under 11 tournament took place today at St Gluvias Cricket Club and Penryn College in glorious sunshine with eighteen teams, amounting to some 144 boys and girls, playing for a place in the finals. After playing a qualifying round of matches the top teams progressed into the shield competition and the others into the plate competition. The semi-finalists in the shield competition were Gorran (147 for 1) who defeated Paul (130 for 4) and Redruth 'A' (176 for 0) convincingly beating Helston (73 for 9).

The final between Redruth 'A' and Gorran was a nail-biting affair with Gorran batting first and after losing some early wickets struggled to make (103 for 7). Redruth 'A' (109 for 4) stayed ahead of the required run rate but were restricted in their last two overs to just 5 runs and after losing a wicket in the last over just managed to scrape a winning score.

The plate semi-finalists were Truro (168 for 1) beating Beacon (143 for 1) and Falmouth 'A' (153 for 2) defeating Redruth 'B' (145 for 5). Truro (150 for 1) was triumphant in the final holding Falmouth 'A' (120 for 3) and taking two late wickets. Mr Peter Grant, ECB County Development Officer, made the presentations with Ben Stevens of Redruth 'A' adjudged 'Player of the Final'.

The 15th Festival attracted around 50 teams and, despite some heavy rain earlier in the week, saw its Finals completed on time on Thursday and Friday. In Sunday's Under 11 softball tournament the eventual winners were Redruth A who defeated Gorran in an exciting final by just 4 runs. In the Plate Truro comfortably defeated Falmouth A. The remainder of the week saw plenty of exciting cricket, with old rivalries renewed and friendships forged. Interestingly there were five tied matches and the abandonment rules, never before invoked in fourteen seasons, applied on three occasions. Twice after Wednesday's downpour, when fresh pitches had to be cut and once on Thursday as one of the school pitches had become dangerous through football having been played on it !

Falmouth were the convincing winners of the Under 13 competition, well tested by West Dulwich, the visitors from London, in the final but, in reality they never looked like losing a match. In the Plate there was some welcome cheer for the home supporters as St Gluvias beat Redruth by seven wickets.

The main event of the week, the Under 15 final, was a disappointing affair, but only due to the impressive play of the St Just outfit, who stormed their way through the competition. Helston could only manage an all out score of 57 in reply to the big total of 143-5 in the traditional 12 eight ball overs final. Indeed a 38 run victory over Grampound Road was the closest challenge, which St just received all week.

The combined Dulwich / Falmouth team won the Plate, defeating Newquay by 12 runs. In the new-look Under 17 eight-a-aside tournament, played with a white ball under 'Cricket Max' rules, an exciting close final saw Falmouth fall just a few runs short of Perranarworthal's 95-4 in 8 eight ball overs.

The special 'Cornish eights' Challenge ended in a one wicket win for the Cornwall VIII over their Overseas Players opponents. Festival chairman Mark Mitchell paid special tribute to the sponsors for their generous support and to the work of the festival Committee, umpires and St Gluvias members who had calmly navigated their way, panic free, through the weather interruptions and other difficulties of the six days to produce an event enjoyed by hundreds of youngsters.
