2007 CORNWALL YOUTH CRICKET FESTIVAL

Honours even at Youth Festival

Local teams and touring clubs shared the honours at the 21st Cornwall Youth Cricket Festival. St Just were victors in a close Under 15 Final, passing new entrants Bournemouth's score of 116 with an over to spare, but they were unlucky for the third year in a row in Thursday's Under 13 Final, losing out heavily to Alleyn's Old Boys, from London, for whom Charlie Rew struck an impressive 77 not out in his side's 131 for 3. That same evening there was, as usual, an exciting climax to the Under 17 event, as Cranmore, from Somerset, defeated Penzance by eight runs, after making 85-3 off their 5 eight-ball overs. The two best teams contested the Final, but credit must also go to Cranleigh (Surrey) and West Dulwich, both Under 15 squads, who reached the semi-finals.

In a postponed Under 11 Shield Final, played this Sunday, after rain curtailed play a week earlier, Rosudgeon A beat Falmouth A by 12 runs, and there were wins for St Austell A and Camborne in the two Plate competitions. Rosudgeon B completed a significant double for their club by winning the Bowl. St Austell also picked up the U13 Plate, with hosts St Gluvias collecting the Bowl.

Under 15 Plate and Bowl winners were Praze B and West Dulwich respectively. Dulwich's Rolf Merchant also recorded the best ever bowling analysis at the Festival, taking 7-13 against St Gluvias B. Some of the traditionally strong clubs had a less successful week, but others did extremely well to field multiple entries and to be competitive in all age groups. In particular, the organisers were full of praise for the representatives of Redruth, St Austell, Penzance and St Gluvias cricket clubs, who all enjoyed their cricket in a sporting manner and supported the Festival wholeheartedly.

Festival Committee Chairman Mark Mitchell was also keen to point out that nearly all of the team managers and coaches had shown an excellent understanding of the aims of the organisers in running the event and had shown great patience during the rain-hit Monday and Tuesday groups.

The 22nd Festival, in 2008, will run from SUNDAY 10th to FRIDAY 15th AUGUST.

Information will continue to be available on the Cornwall cricket website, www.cornwall-cricket.org.uk.

CYCF officials would like to thank everyone who helped with this year's event, particularly Penryn Rugby Club, The Lord's Taverners, One & All Sports and other sponsors, as well as R Booth Ltd, who produced the excellent programme, and the members of St Gluvias CC.
